Robert Coddington - Los Angeles, California

Robert Coddington used to considered drag queens an abomination to the gay community- now his life is devoted to archiving and maintaining a very unique collection of drag history and culture. Coddington oversees the video archives of Nelson Sullivan, a relatively unknown video documentarian who lived in Manhattan and taped over 1800 hours of the gay-influenced East Village art and drag scene -including the only complete recordings the first four Wigstock festivals.

Robert's work with Nelson's footage has received the attention of museum curators around the world (Nelson's videos have been shown in France, Itialy, Spain, England, Ireland and Brazil) and last December a Sullivan video installation created by Robert was included in a group show which a select group of American artist including works by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Tom Rubnitz, Greer Lankton, Kenny Sharf and Nan Goldin.

Having digitized and interviewed his way across America to document some of the last pre-Stonewall queens and queers, Robert has collected materials from legends such as including Jayne County, Holly Woodlawn, Diamond Lil and Guy Richards. Now residing in Los Angeles, he is always seeking out those people who have been forgotten by history to include them with his archives for future generations of queers. He does not 'do drag' and he says women flirt with him much more than gay men. Feel free to email him with any leads for his archives.
