FOF #164 - Justin Bond Will Die For You - 09.30.05

Kiki and Herb met each other as children in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1934. Their tumultuous lives have been affected by the painful loss of Kiki's child Coco and Herb's difficult life as a Catskills piano player.
After a disastrous turn working for the Princess Cruise lines Kiki and Herb were "rediscovered" by a new generation in the early nineties in San Francisco. Since then they have performed around the world as a sort of freak show for the post-modern set.
Or so they say.
Kiki and Herb are characters portrayed by Justin Bond and Kenny Melman. Justin embodies the character of Kiki DuRane, a 70 year old alcoholic woman who grabs her audiences both physically and emotionally as she belts out a montage of pop, hip-hop and torch songs while Kenny provides the musical underscore on the piano as the "gay retard jew" named Herb. Got that?
In the fall of 2004 they performed a sold-out farewell concert at Carnegie Hall which they recorded and released as an album "Kiki and Herb Will Die for You." Click on the link below to buy it on iTunes.

I was able to catch Justin during the middle of a Marianne Faithful concert in London, England where we talked about the early 90's, grad school in London, Kiki and Herb's new tour, and her experience of singing at Carnegie Hall for a sold out house of her adoring fans, friends, and family.
To buy tickets for their show on Oct 14 in Chicago, you can visit the MCA website or call (312) 397-4010. You can also visit their website to find out if they're coming to your city.
COMING SOON: An in-depth hour-long interview with Dante's Cove star Charlie David! And yes, he's met Smallville's Tom Welling.

Last I saw Justin was on the set of John Cameron Mitchell's film 'Short Bus' back in May. He introduced himself to me, and all I could say in complete admiration "I know who you are, you are Justin Bond/Kiki." As if he needs an introduction.
A Kiki and Herb show is a complete religious experience! Kiki might be a complete drunken hysterical mess, but Justin is the mind, heart, and sweet sensible soul that runs the show.
Thank you Fausto for this awesome interview. BTW - I met Miss Understood last night for the first time. Another Taurus with a good eye for business.

Growing up I was always baffled by my mother's inability to name things correctly. For example, she saw the film "Fried Green Tomatoes" and told me she saw "Green Ripe Tomatoes". The most frustrating part is that there were some terms she'd hear over and over and over throughout her life yet she could never absorb how everyone else in the world said it with the exception of her. Like the term "orthodox" as in "orthodox Jews". She would call them "orthodoc" as if "orthodocs" w do I as the plural. My uncle corrected her once or twice but it would just not sink in.
I realize now that some people just have brains that function differently than my own. Why do I bring this up? Because you, Fausto kept referring to Kiki and Herb as if they were "Peaches and Herb", pronouncing "Herb" as "Erb" with the silent H. Didn't you ever notice after seeing them onstage and being familiar with them for years that his name is Herb with an H? Justin referred to him during the conversation several times a Herb. She's probably thinking "Jeez, let me mention Herb's name one more time and see if this faggot picks up on it."
I had a similar situation recently when a client from New Jersey called me to arrange to have a Cher impersonator at an event. He kept pronouncing her name "Shur". I thought that was so odd because he pronounced everything else pretty normally by my standards. Then, a month later I encountered another person who referred to Cher as "Shur". I realized then that it must be a regional New Jersey thing.
Therefore I'm apologize for criticizing your pronunciation of Herb. I'm sure it's just your thick Puerto Rican Accent.
XOXOXOXOX,
MU

BRAIN! I'm over tired.

Miss U! You're right! The dropping of the "H" is a very Puerto Rican way of saying things. I always tought the H would be silent anyways. I got some emails telling me that the "H" IS NOT silent! Sorry FOF listeners. You can whip me now until my back is as scarred and misshapen as Michael Jackson's face.
Hey, at least I pronounced Justin correctly and not "Yosteen"
Speaking of the way you pronounce Hhhherbs, how ARE you supposed to pronounced Basil?
Is it BAY-sil or BAH-sel? Tomahto, Tomayto, is this something we can call off?
Said by: Fausto at October 1, 2005 12:47 PM
Hola Fauthto y Madko,
Hmm, I well there is a brilliant puppet artist out of NY named Basil Twist and he pronounces it Bah-sel (almost rhymes with "castle"). I prefer to pronounce it like Tallulah Bankhead "Bahhhhhhh-sel Dahhhhhling" but that's just me.

great interview, fausto. (hey, alex, i haven't forgotten you.) i went up from new orleans to see their farewell show in september 2004. besides seeing kiki and herb in that historic setting, the concert is still vivid in my mind because they had the hottest audience imaginable. yum.
i'm still in greensboro, nc as a katrina evacuee because my auntie isn't well and can't travel. the memory of that trip made my day. thanks so much.

Pobrecito Fausto, el no tiene la culpa. Es su raiz borica la causa por la cual el acesinó el nombre de pobre Herb.
Porfavor Miss Understood no lo regañe por su ignorancia.
PS - It was great to have finally met you Miss Understood, you are a true NYC icon.

After listening to this episode I went directly to the iTunes Music Store once I got home (I'd been listening to the show at a café while having a cup of coffee or four - probably got some strange looks from other people when I laughed out loud) but the album doesn't seem to be awailable for buying. I've tried the iTunes search function as well as the link in the show notes but both gives the same result: that the album doesn't exist at iTunes Music Store.
Too bad. I would really have liked to buy the album at least 'cause I suspect that the chances that Kiki and Herb will perform in Sweden any time soon isn't that big.
Oh well...

Adam– You have to have iTunes launched as an application when you click on the button... (apple's bug)
You can also purchase it on Amazon.com which takes longer...
Said by: Fausto at October 2, 2005 04:17 PM
I already bought my tickets for the 10pm show. See you in the lobby Fausto!

I've had iTunes open the whole time, it still claims that it can't find the album.
I think the problem is this: iTunes Music Store has different affiliates in different countries and apparently you can only buy albums from the local Store in the country you live in. But the local stores may not have the exact same albums that the US store have. Since I live in Sweden, I can only shop from the Swedish iTunes Music Store which doesn't have that album. At least not yet. I've made a request for it but I haven't recieved any answer yet.
It may be easier to order it from Amazon instead but on the other hand it may be more expensive as I might have to pay customs fees ...
I'll try some other alternatives first.

Aw no way! That totally sucks Adam. That's so bizzare that American Indie artists can't get their stuff for sale in the overseas markets.
That's just b.s. in my opinion.
Said by: Fausto at October 3, 2005 01:49 PM
Adam -
Are you sure you can't shop, via the iTunes application, from Sweden? It may be unique to the application available in Sweden??? I'm not sure.
However, if you want to try, there is a way to shop in "other countries" because I've bought music from the Italian "store".
If you have iTunes 5.0 try this:
Music store > scroll to the very bottom of the opening screen and you should see something that states "Choose your country" > Click on U.S. I found the music in that "shop".
Hope that helps!

- Joe G.
Thanks for the tip.
First of all, I can shop from the Swedish Store, I've done that a couple of times before.
It turns out that I can browse other stores. I did as you suggested and went to the US store and then I clicked on the link which now worked. I got hits on two versions of the album, one of which seemed to contain less songs than the other.
However:
Once I logged in to my account at the Store I got a dialoge box stating that my account is only valid for shopping in the Swedish Store and that clicking the OK option will take me back to the Swedish Store which it did and then it was back to "Can't find what you're looking for" ...
A bit of a real life Catch 22 there...
Said by: Adam at October 3, 2005 03:22 PM
Sorry Adam! We can only point in the direction to buying the album. I'm def. fowarding this to Justin and hope that she can talk to their record label about making sure the album is available everywhere.
Sadly, I think it might more to do with European record labels and Apple than anything else!
And they want to RAISE prices? How about making the files availbale for purchase in the first place!
