I just wanted to add a couple things - Ang Lee is actually a very diverse director, sure he made CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON but he also made SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, RIDE WITH THE DEVIL, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and, now, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - everything from Jane Austin to a Civil War picture to a 70's drama about dysfunction to a big-screen comic book to a gay romance - he's just about the most diverse mainstream director out there. If you've not seen THE ICE STORM, it's a good one to see, IMO.

Also, in the short story BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN by Annie Proulx, Jack does die. The movie spells it out more a bit more clearly but it's all there in the short story. She tells Ennis about the tire but it's fairly obvious what probably really happened. Not based on what she says as much as how she says it. I really loved the movie and thought it was a sweeping old-style romantic melodrama complete with a tragic ending, only with gay characters in the lead. As for gay movies that break the tragic mold, I hope you've checked out BEAUTIFUL THING and TRICK - both refreshing alternatives to the standard doomed gay romance movies.

some other great gay films where the homos don't bite the bullet are "My Beautiful Laundrette" and "Ma Vie en Rose" (the latter being one of the best films I've ever seen dealing with the topic of gender, sexuality developing in children.)

You're right Craig- Anthony Daniels is alive and well and living with HIV.

In the late 80's Anthony Daniels had a passionate love affair with Kenny Baker (the guy who played R2D2 in the original Star Wars movies) where he contracted a computer virus from Baker, and then later the HIV virus.

Interestingly enough, George Lucas podered incorporating both actor's HIV status into the remake of the Star Wars "Prequels", but thought that might make the movies too relevant and interesting.

Hey guys, I’m totally on with Fausto with his movie review. I agree whole heartily that every gay movie has to have a tragic ending, with very few actually having somewhat of a happy ending. With Brokeback mountain, I could see the plot coming a mile a way. And while I understand the purpose of the movie is to understand ‘unrequited love’ or the ‘road not followed’. We deal with so much shit in our daily lives, give me a fucking happy ending. I read enough depressing books in School like ‘Separate Peace’ and ‘Catcher in the Rye’ if I’m gonna pay for a movie, give me a fucking gay wedding at the end. Why can Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant live happily ever after, but all gay people are stuck in ruts at the end.

Also at the very end he went ‘Jack I swear...” Swear what? What is he swearing. I need conclusion.

I also glanced at the end of the book, Jack does die in the book/short story.

Anyhow, in my opinion, its an OK movie, not great, just ok, but a step forward none the less.

I just don't think that change can come until people like oursevles take it upon ourselves to make the films, television programs, radio and podcasts we want to hear.

In that sense I'm very thankful that we have this tool (RSS feeds) to allow us to effectively deliver this type of content that would NEVER get the distribution it deserves.

I had the same thought/question (the short story ends pretty much the same way) and I read it as Ennis swearing that he'll be a better person/truer to himself from now on. After all, he'd just told his daughter he would be there at her wedding, a marked change in his behavior. Or maybe it's him finally coming to terms with his feelings and swearing his love for Jack?
