FOF #233 - Blues Singing Beauty - 01.26.06

Podcast
The gorgeous blues singing Katherine Davis
joins us today to talk about her passion for the Blues, it's healing qualities, and her love for music of all kinds.

Here in Chicago, Katherine Davis' name is synonymous with blues music. Not only is she distingusihed as a singer, but also as a oral historian who travels the world talking about her experience in growing up in the iconic Cabrini Green projects.

Cabrini Green was one of the first successful housing projects that in the late 60's began to suffer from urban decay. Many people belive that a lot this stemmed from the consequences of the assasination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the subsequent riots that followed. Cabrini Green is also know as the setting for the popular 70's television show Good Times, that portrayed a black family struggling to make it in the urban landscape.

And good times we all had! Miss Ronnie describes the first time when she heard Katherine Davis sing as "a warm hug." Listen to this wonderful 'a-capella' show where Ms. Davis sings her heart and soul out to you, the listener.

Just back from her travels in Turkey, Katherine is working on a brand new album which will be recorded live at the Old Town School of Folk Music this Sunday, January 29th at 4pm in Chicago, IL. We highly recommend you buy your tickets now online from the site here.

Special note: we consider Miss Ronnie the Ja'net DuBois of podcasting, (not the Wanda DuBois as I mistakenly said on the show). Ja'net in the 1970's portrayed the popular Wilona Woods on the tv sitcom Good Times. The last film she's done lately she plays Bernie Mac's mom in Charlies Angles: Full Throttle. Something tells me Bernie Mac had something to do with that. (we're big fans of his tv show)

Listen as Miss Ronnie details her encounter at the Victoria's Secretstore where some skinny white girl wouldn't give her the time of day.

Just give me some of that good time Feast of Fools.

I know, every time I go in for a fitting at Banana Republic they look at me funny. "What do you mean you dont sell bananas?"

Great show! Good to hear Miss Ronnie again. When I first moved to Chicago (1995) I used to get turned around a lot (the diagonal streets always messed me up). I lived in constant fear that I'd accidentally wind up in Cabrini Green since I only had a vague notion of where it was. During my house hunting my realator pointed out the location ... problem solved.

Take Care!

Do you know there was a character on Saturday Night Live in the late 80's called Cabrini Green the Pregnant Teen? I believe the woman who played her was Danedra Vance. It was a great character, she made you laugh while making you think about the lives of kids who grow up in those areas and that they were real people, a fact which a lot of people in this country like to ignore.

What a great voice! I really liked the talk about singin' the blues in Turkey - I'd never even imagined something like that. Always learning something new, very cool.

I gotta go see one of these Angel Bras for myself now - what a strange contraption.

Thankyou for all your excellent work boys. I enjoyed the last edition of the podcast especially, Katherine Davis's voice was astonishing and her story was really interesting too; about her experiences with the church as a child etc.

Keep up the good work. The best thing about your show for is the variety of guests you guys have on. I particularly enjoy the culture related stuff though, the interview with that Loving Mountains, Loving Men guy was also really interesting. (What's with the title though?).

I must have too much time on my hands - Miss Ronnie, your story about buying bras, and those angel bras you mentioned trying on, had me bursting out laughing on the treadmill last night! All the Korean blokes working out around me already think I'm completely nuts for this kind of behaviour thanks to my new FOF listening habits.

LOVED today's show!!! I loved the singing and I loved the laughter. I saw Katherine Davis at Voltaire many a time... but damn, Miss Ronnie I didn't know you worked there too! :-) You probably waited on me. I was a semi-regular there once upon a time.

Anyway, Katherine's stories were touching and interesting. She was a wonderful guest and I'd love to hear more from her.

And Miss Ronnie's bra stories were hilarious. I was hootin' and hollerin' on the train this morning. ;-)

One thing... Miss Ronnie's mic sounded a little tinny to me... just an observation. ;)

Oh and another bit of Ja'net DuBois trivia: She was the lead female singer (as well as composer) of the "The Jeffersons" theme song "Movin' On Up." Girl could sing, too! :)

Said by: RcktMan at January 27, 2006 01:11 AM

Great show - LOVE it when you have music featured! I agree with RcktMan - it sounded like Miss Ronnie was on a speakerphone. Interesting trivia about DuBois, RcktMan, thanks...

Okay - I burst out loud (many times) listening to this, but particularly at this line about Kevin Federline: "His sperm is so strong it impregnates the fetus."

It's so sick and wrong... yet I can't stop laughing. Great show!

it's like taking all your friends with you on a daily commute. Great show!

Said by: Diana at January 29, 2006 07:14 AM

Guys, another fantastic show. FOF always has great music but Katherine Davis has an incredible voice and a great sense of humor.

I got stuck working the graveyard shift alone this week and FOF kept me awake and entertained all week.

I also wanted to say that I love Miss Ronnie's attitude. It may be harsh at times, but you can always tell that she has the best intentions at heart.

Thanks for all you guys do,

Eric from Texas
