FOF #238 - The Truth in Drag - 02.02.06

Podcast
Josh Kilmer-Purcell led a double life in New York City in the 1990's.
During the day he worked as an art director for a major advertising agency. At night, he wore a pair of acrylic breasts filled with water and live goldfish and under the name Aquadesia.

Also known as Aqua, he worked his routine with our very own Miss Understood at Lucky Chang's, a popular drag-entertainment Asian restaurant in New York City. Aqua won many contests, but the wild thing about her life is the excess of her existence-booze, drugs, hooker parties, bondage freaks and a hustler boyfriend.

On the right is a Wigstock publicity photo of Josh Kilmer-Purcell as Aqua. Note the live goldfish in his costume!

On todays show we discuss his new book "I Am Not Myself These Days: A Memoir." Josh's book is tale of being in love with the wrong man in the wrong way. This troublesome romance starts in a drunken mess and ends, well... we don't want to give it away so you will have to read it to find out!

In Josh Kilmer-Purcell's memoir you might see the influence of his good friend James Frey, author of the highly debated book on everyone's lips: "A Million Little Pieces." Listen to Josh speak candidly about the "frey over Frey" in the publishing world, the ramification it presents to his own book, and Oprah's reaction to Frey's missteps.

Delicious, pernicious and nutritious, the Feast of Fools.

It's a pleasure boys. You give great interview.

Josh is extraordinary – one of those rare people that can be affable and generous with people while being interestingly edgy. No easy task, and I'm thrilled that his book is coming out with such resounding fagfare.

Wow!!! Another great interview. And finally I find there is a "nice" drag queen out there. Off to Amazon to buy the book... forgive me for passing on the Paul Lynde bundle. He always annoyed me.

Any chance Johnny Depp could play Josh? He has experience since he played a Cuban Drag Queen in a Spanish language movie (The title escapes me .. I think it was "Into the Night"). He smuggles out the leads autobiography hidden in his .... you can guess.

I really enjoyed hearing Josh and think his book sounds great. I do have to say that, while I respect his loyalty to his friend, James Frey, I think Frey's getting what he, essentially, asked for. What if A LOWLIFE IN HIGHHEELS was revealed to be 80% fiction? Wouldn't that change your opinion of the book and Holly Woodlawn? It should. I love Josh's phrase "the truth in drag" and apply that idea to many "true" stories I read, but come on, people! There's a huge difference between a few hours in jail and 87 days in prison, to name just one example.

I think Josh was close to the truth when he brought up Frey's addiction - Frey's behavior strikes me as continuing to be very addict-like; he lied to people and emotionally manipulated them to get what he wanted. That sure sounds like every addict I've ever known. Having said that, I'm sure he was manipulated by his publisher and Oprah and whomever, too - but the buck stops with him.

Again, I applaud Josh's devotion to his friend, but I suspect that, as a writer, he has more respect for the difference between fiction and nonfiction than Frey did.

I was reading through the various post today when my 6 year old asked who thatwas (Josh as Aqua). Now he wants to meet him. Strange .. he never wanted to meet any of the other stars of the show.

But those fish breast are wonderful

Eric,
I love that your kid wants to meet Aqua! She does look like some kind of freaky superhero.

After Macauley Culcan played Michael Alig I think it's fitting for that fag kid (who should be somewhat grown up by noe) from Home Improvement should play Aqua. I forget his name.
