FOF #280 - Nine Years of Insanity - 04.03.06

Podcast
The Feast of Fools is a podcast that simply will not die.
Show after show, year after year, we've gone from being a drag show at some local gay bar, to a wacky play, a musical varitey show, and now in our latest incarnation, the worlds most downloaded gay podcast.

Just what a "gay" podcast is, I guess is a podcast made by gay people, for eveyrone to enjoy. I see us as ambassadors of taste, culture and opinion on everything that crosses our fruity minds into the hearts and souls of the good people of the world. Almost 300 shows, over 1000 people on our frappr map, over 5000 daily downloads and over 3000 subscriptions on iTunes alone.

The Feast of Fools podcast is a portrait of my friends, my family, and the world I live in. We're all part of the great big time capsule that the internet is, with all these voices buzzing around. Its humbling and exciting all at the same time.

Join us today as Marc Felion, Amanda Steinstein, and me, Fausto Fernós as we reflect on the ol' odometer turning round and round, the death of Mexican-American singer Selena, and the new BCC gay re-make of the legendary sci-fi tv show "Dr. Who" or as they call him in Puerto Rico: "Doctor Quien?" Not really.

Note! We ARE NOT planning to do a show at the Hothouse on April 14th. Pictured to the right is a poster from one of our shows done way back in 2001. Check out my Feast of Fools poster gallery of show posters (the ones I've been able to find) I've made from 1998-2005.

Art. The final frontier of the mind. These are the podcasts made by the Feast of Fools. Our mission: to discover strange new people, to savor what others dare not taste, to foolishly go where others dare not go. (cue in intro music.)

The Feast of Fools is coming to NYC! Thursday April 13th 7pm at the Starlight Lounge in the Village, NYC. Chip any amount of money you have in your coin jar by clicking here. Help bring Ms. V-Marr, Ronnie, Amanda, Marc and your flaming blue pal Fausto to the Big Apple to meet you face to face. We've raised $802 dollars so far! If you're planning on flying up there, get your tickets through Orbitz and support our show!

Without you guys my life would be just another hum-drum commuter's life. You've inspired me to new music, friends, websites (Frappr/Flickr), and I've even got pup Don in the picture... If ya ever need more kinky advice, just ask! We're here to help (grin)!

Best of luck now & for another crazy year and more to come! I look forward to more and more and your eventual visit to LA.

One of my favorite podcasts by far. missed Amanda S. and just learning about Doctor Who now thats it on Sci-fi channel. My Scottish bud is obsessed with that show and is now trying to show me past seasons of the show. I just might, because I enjoyed the shows of what I've seen so far.

I also enjoy to watch QAF (the uk version), even if it only lasted 2 seasons. I plan to try to make a odd interview with myself weaved in, but I doubt it will be as well as gary C (sp?). I heard that either in the last version/season, but most likely this version that the actor who plays Vince in the QAF UK, is in a episode. which makes me very happy.

why yes, I am a dork.

I bug you guys because I love and todays podcast I really enjoyed because it was so on key with what I'm looking around at. I know you should be proud to have a brit=comedy/sci-fi/qaf/book-reading dork as a fan. we're the type to pimp you out majorly. lol.

have no way to really end this so..

Amanda I promise that I will accompany you to whatever sleezy 24-hour diner you find in which to wait for your flight after the meet-and-greet. I'm so excited for this event, and to meet you as well, as it will definitely be the highlight of a VERY boring week. Keep podcasting!

Wow .. great podcast. And Educational. Now I'm counting the days till your interview with Bruce Villanch. I have his book and the video he did. Truly a great and OUT comic. He worked as a journalist in Chicago in the 70's and appeared with Diana Ross in Mahogany. He also wrote ton's of material for Bette Midler, my personal Diva of choice.

Happy Days guys!!!!

Happy Anniversary Feast Of Fools!!!

You guys are so wonderful and we're all really lucky to have you in our lives. Yay!

IML actually stands for International Mister Leather, although I picture a contest called International Male Leather as being a bunch of guys showing off in Prada boots while a crowd of 30 something men in ill-fitting and horribly looking overly gay clothes stand around and party. (can you tell I really hated the whole International Male catalogue thing). LOL! I can totally see Bruce doing the show, how funny. He's a doll. I saw him at the LA gay pride parade two years ago and then last year in Hairspray. He was also at the GayVN awards last month. He seems really cool. He'll be an excellent guest for FOF.

I loved your comments about the American Queer As Folk. When I tell people I'm from Pittsburgh they go "oh, just like in QAF!!!" and I just laugh. Amanda will back me up on this (hi sweetie, thanks for the shout out). I'm sorry, that whole thing about Liberty Ave having all those cool bars and the weekend evenings looking like a giant street party is all bullshit. Liberty Ave is like two gay bars (one of which is in a basement!) and a bunch of bums and hookers. I will give it one thing, someone there does their homework because they mention the names of a lot of local places that are all real and they often have an issue of the local gay rag "Pittsburgh's OUT" laying around, rather than some fictional glossy magazine.

And yes, Tom Bakker was my favorite doctor. I'm surprised you didn't mention the movie where they got all the different doctors together. That was cool. (yes, I'm a sci-fi geek too, heh heh).

Love you guys!!!

I adored you video Fausto. Plus you were wearng my hometown jersey, GOOD BOY! My boyfriend (AJ) and I are thinking about going to the NYC meet and greet. He's not 21 yet (June 9th! I'm excited) so we might have to hold off until you have a get together here in Washington, D.C. (THE LAND OF THE iPOD!) Love the show, where's Amanda @?

Happy Birthday FOF gang! You guys are terrific! I just started listening to you about a month ago, and I'm officially addicted now. I've turned several friends on to your podcasts in the LA and Ventura areas of CA. One of my friends is moving to Chicago, so he's going to keep an ear out for you too... and hopefully join you for one of your MEAT & GREETs.

Thanks for all your effort and time, you guys do a FANTASTIC job. My husband and I now listen to every episode, and we giggle at every conversation, especially if Miss Ronnie's in the room. Fausto & Marc, you guys are HOT, TOO! You would do absolutely marvelous with a video show, I'm sure of it. But PLEASE stay on podcast, please! Your humor and sincerity and fabulous fun give our relationship a new exciting flavor. We love you!

Grreat show!!! I listened this morning on the train-- it's been a while since I've done that. It was just what I needed to get myself going today. :)

BTW A little clarification on the Tom Tunney-Chicago Gay Men's Chorus/Windy City Gay Chorus thing... Windy City sang the national anthem at Comiskey Park (now US Cellular) in 2003 as part of the "Out at the Ballgame" event that happens every year. Then later on that same year, Tom Tunney helped the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus become the first gay chorus to ever sing the national anthem at Wrigley Field. It just so happened that the day we sang in 2003 was the same day that the Cubs clinched the division title for the first time in 14 years-- and we got to stay and watch the game! It was pretty incredible.

And like Amanda said, it is pretty awesome that Chicago has two gay choruses, two newspapers, and one incredible podcast in the Feast of Fools. It's a helluva town. :)

Hi FOF

Thanks for having me on the show. I din't think the quality of the recording was all that good. I wish I'd put more time into it then I would have put Amanda and Ronnie in from past shows, maybe use some of your celeb names to boost the content.

In terms of the Queer as Folk USA... I quite like it, it's more soapy and easy to watch, whereas the original is 'edgy,' but there's only 2 series of them.

The 'Dr Who' conversation made me laugh. The BBC are about to launch another DR 'David Tennant' though Billie Piper remains as his sidekick (or whatever she is - I don't watch it).

Glad you like the British shows, all I seem to watch are American programmes, maybe we should trade continents? Love you much gary c xXx

I'll look out for you on myspace Amanda! Best of luck with the shows coming up. x

Doctor Who has always been gay! It is sooooo camp!! And everyone in gay Dr Who circles knows the reason The Doctor never has sex with his assistants is because they are his fag hags!

My best friend has loved Dr Who since he was a kid and he converted me with this series when it was on in the Uk last year. I loved hearing Amanda rave about it. You all made me laugh today!

Said by: Janie at April 4, 2006 01:08 PM

Amanda! I love you! Wonderful to hear someone so cool proudly proclaim her sci-fi geekitude. Your Dr. Who knowledge is impressive!

Said by: Anna at April 7, 2006 10:52 PM

Hey kids-

Love the show but was shocked at the Tom Tunney bashing today. I don't know where Fausto got the information about the chorus/ball game thing, but I was a part of CGMC at the time and I don't remember it that way.

Now, I am not one those "love me, love my family" sissies, and I do think it is good that Tom is held accountable for his actions, but at the end of the day I think you carry a lot of influence (I know that the podcast is like a little party in my head and it effects me). Careful with the spin. For example, while I am not exactly happy about meters on Sunday, I can think of worse ways of raising revenue for the neighborhood or (worse) NOT raising revenue for the hood and letting it fall apart. His job is not easy and no matter what he does, he will be hated by some. As for not mentioning his partner, maybe he forgot. I know Hillary Swank did at the Oscars. Even if it was intentional, perhaps his boyfriend left an empty toilet paper roll that morning and Ms Tunney was pissed. Who knows? My only personal experience with her was as a customer of Ann's where she has always been graticious. When I volunteered for a GLBT suburban youth project and we wanted to have a Pride party, we only had to ask once to use the space at Ann's and there was no charge. Not bad for "Daley's lapdog". Ouch!

Outside of that, you queers are the best entertainment I know since I discovered "Cookin With Tiddle" (if you haven't seen it, check it out on cable access in Chicago on Thursday nights. It's a hoot).

Thanks for keeping me company on my commute and making me laugh at all the nonsense.

Said by: Baby at April 8, 2006 12:12 AM

Hey guys, can you tell me where I can get 'Hey Willpower' music. I've looked everywhere.

Said by: George at April 9, 2006 11:32 AM

Here's an experiment:

Listen to Marsian DeLellis episode (from January 2nd).

Then listen to today's episode with Ferron.

Are they, like, the same person? They sound like it.

Things that make you go Hmmm....
