FOF #408 - Gee You Smell Delicious - 10.16.06

Just like the show's title, Sal-E does smell delicious! He went by a local restaurant to get a bite to eat before dinner and came into the home studio wafting a delicious scent of filet mignon, escargot, garlic mashed potatoes, steam asparus and blue mojitos.
Needless to say I'm jealous.
On today's show we are proud to join the Gobal Fund's fight for AIDS with a limited run of Feast of Fools red t-shirts! For every shirt you get we'll donate 5% of the money to fighting AIDS in Africa.
These aren't your ordinary Feast of Fools t-shirts. They are made on 100% combed cotton, the sexy stretchy kind everyone looks great it. These cranberry red t-shirts look great on everyone and feel even better too! Click here to see a detail of the design.
To make the deal sweeter we're throwing in a DVD of some of our favorite shows no longer available online.
Christmas is just around the corner, and what a perfect gift would be to your favorite friend, a Feast of Fools red t-shirt, a DVD with dozens of vintage shows, and a red iPod.

Hey Jau- the shows are taped in advanced, so fix yourself a cocktail, calm down - the shout out is coming! I put you in the show notes. We really DO appreciate it!

Jau,
I mailed your tshirt a few days before we went to LA. How long does mail to Maylasia usually take?

hi, love the red shirt! two questions-- can you ship to the philippines and is it available in a small (or x-small, even?)-- i am but a petite asian flower...
thanks and hugs and kisses to y'all!
Said by: patrick at October 16, 2006 09:27 AM
The shirt is available sizes: small, medium, large, x-large and 2x-large.
These are a limited run, so quantities in every size are going, so if you wait until the middle of novemeber to get your t-shirt, you might not get it in the size you want. Trust me, these t-shirts look GOOD!

Hi Mumu-
Victoria has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the show to sort out some personal matters.
Out of sake and respect for her privacy, I rather not go into details about this.
Her contributions to the show were always fantastic and we miss her a lot. Thanks for caring.

Fausto,
Target isn't all that for women, so i've been boycotting them as well. unfortunately i can only afford to shop at wal*mart anyway. target's prices are higher in PA than wal-mart overall.

Great Show! Loved the Q&A part and the red shirt is fantastic looking. Sal-E, I would love to see a quicktime of you making someone up. 3 more days until Glen and I invade Chicago.

Sal-E - You forgot to mention the new Disney theme park in Hong Kong! Yet another park to put on your list. I wonder if the characters have simulated sex there too?!

Didn't Target refuse to let the Salvation Army people ask for money in front of their stores last Christmas? I'm sure all huge corporations are evil to an extent--they're all about making money, no matter what the cost. Still, I sort of miss the grinding, incessant, drum of the bells as the volunteer looks at you with their saddest face and asks for some spare change...

The salvation army does good things for some people, but they also have been very nasty in their hiring practices- despite they are seen as a non-profit organization.
If you are Jewish, Catholic or Muslim chances are they won't hire you. Forget about it if you're gay.
Also they've made some nasty deals with GWB insuring they won't lose their federal funding if they go along with his adminitration's policies:
[From Wikipeida, so take it with a grain of salt:]
In July 2001, The Washington Post published a Salvation Army internal memo. According to that document, the Salvation Army and President George W. Bush made a deal: the Salvation Army would support Bush's push on faith based initiatives if Bush made sure that the Salvation Army would be exempt from local and state legislations that prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation. The leak created considerable amount of protest from the gay community and other liberal groups.

I *know* Sal-E didn't say "valentimes" day.
Said by: Steven in San Francisco at October 16, 2006 04:13 PM
I think a video of Sal-E doing makeup would be fantastic. I remember a long time ago Marc saying that the makeup section of Aquadesia's book was a favorite of his and I agree. I'm looking forward to Sal-E video version of that.

The Salvation Army is a fundamentalist Christian organization that forces the beneficiaries of its aid to sit through its coo-coo religious harangues. I never heard of Target kicking them out, but if they did then good for them!

I know Wal-Mart gets a bad rap - and rightly so - but one area that no one knows too much about is their recent environmental initiatives. They are pushing for a global reduction in size of product packaging and of resources used to produce packaging. They are trying to completely eliminate styrofoam in packaging in favor of paper pulp, and to reduce the amount of plastics used in clamshell style packaging and packing tape used to seal boxes.
WM has also begun experimenting with "green" stores - including composting and water recycling to reduce cost and enviornmental impacts from their landscaping, and by installing solar panels to reduce the amount of energy consumed by their stores. I think they are testing this in 1 store now, but the plan is to find a way to make it work and begin rolling it out.
A few months ago they ever had Al Gore screen his film for the executives and hosted a major roundtable discussion on how WM can help to fight global warming.
I'm not defending them here, but credit where its due. Some positive changes for a company that usually doesn't know that that means.

p.s did you know that the GAP is selling a red t-shirt for $28.00 but it was only 16.00 before this whole red aids fundraising thing started ,the help from the Gap is nice but they don't loss a dime in the end; they make a profit . fucking big business at it's finest, give to charity as long was they don't loss profit
Is the GAP as EVIL as Walmart???
where is Cesar, damn it!!!!!!!!!!!
great show...
I'm keeping an eye on my mailbox Mr. fausto ...

BSG is too intense for me. I tried to watch it, and I am very interested in how it turns out, but I just can't sit through it all. Too much.
SAL-E! Girl, you need to check out this podcast: http://www.babylonpodcast.com/ They toally geek out over Babylon 5.

wha-wha-what!? Fausto is way cuter than that 'tard-looking Jeffrey from Project Runway - his fuxing neck is wider than his head and tattoo-ing the name of a city on your neck is just wrong. Keep up the good work guys - hey is there a way to put a link to your player on my MSN spaces page like on MySpace? Bye babies!

So surprised my dorky ass question was put on the air. I thought just getting mentioned was cool. Uber shibby all the way.
To comment on the target ,walmart, salvation army thing.....I worked at target for 2 years and trust me the salvation army people who worked at the store I worked at, were not very nice and the fact that you can hear the bells they ring everywhere in the bulding and if you have to work 6+ hours...you want to stuff money up somewhere for them to stop. I never been a big fan of walmart, but my grandma works there and when she had cancer they brought her tto the Mayo clinic and paid for ovver 80% of her bills (over 800 grand for all the operations) and has been living cnacer free for 5 years.....which is good, but aside from the health care for Full-time employees, its not a very good plce to work, and target isn't super badass or everything, but they let you have more of a life while working there....but thats my dumbass opinion. I'll shut up now.

Hey, Guys --
Loved the show. The Sci-Fi show with them flying around in the bug was called Lexx. I couldn't get into it -- something about the dorky robots with TVs for eyes and mouth was just too much (or too little) for my tastes.
Galactica is awesome. Very intense -- so much so that my husband can't watch it with me, so I have a couple "battlestar buddies" who come over so we can watch it together. Best show on TV, though.
Anna -- you could read the recaps of the show if you want to keep up on it -- on www.televisionwithoutpity.com. The recaps are usually hilarious, but they also tell the story very well.
And finally, anyone read "Nickeled and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich? She goes to work at four minimum-wage jobs to see if you can make ends meet. One of them is Wal-Mart. The way the management treated her (and the other employees) is enough to put me off shopping there ever again.
Hugs from San Francisco!

I wanted to inject a few random comments on the show:
Air America did do some podcasting, but it was podcast versions of shows they were also putting on the radio. The two shows with which I was most familiar were "The Al Franken Show" and "Mother Jones Radio". I used to listen to "The Al Franken Show" until it went to a paid subscription basis, and I still listen to "Mother Jones Radio" because it didn't go to a paid subscription. It is sad to hear that Air America is going Chapter 11, and hopefully they can successfully reorganize.

Sal-E, I am glad to know that I am not the only gay man who loves Patrick Nagel's pictures. My partner was horrified to know that I loved Nagel, treating it with the same level of contempt one would get if he went to a fine dining restaurant and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. Incidentally, for the other Nagel lovers out there, his widow has an official website that will eventually be offering official, high-quality downloadable versions of his paintings. The site URL is: http://www.patricknagel.com/index.html

Okay, I know I'm late but I missed the show yesterday and have a few comments. First of all, people don't think about the impact of what they are doing when they put themselves on the internet. I will admit that one time a friend of mine and I dressed up like Hello Kitty and my have alegedly taken some scandalous photos. HOWEVER, we kept them for our own amusement and did not post them anywhere online, not even in our own blogs. It was only for the amusement of a small circle of close friends. We knew that if those photos got out it would be hurtful to any children who saw them, it would piss off the company who makes the product and it might get the people who arranged for us to be in the costumes in trouble.
Having said that, it was pretty freakin' hillarious.
I got dragged into Battlestar Galactica kicking and screaming but on the advice of several friends, one of which dropped the first two season's worth of DVDs in my lap and said "Watch these!", I was sucked in. I actually prefer Star Trek Voyager because it was a lot more fun but BG has totally gotten me sucked in. I can't not watch it now. Especially because of Jamie Bamber with the jawline you could crack walnuts on (even in the fatsuit). Although, I have to say, if he really gained the weight that he's supposed to have on the show, I don't think he would look quite so frumpy.
