I am so sorry for your loss, take comfort in knowing you did all you could for him in his final days and he is now free from pain or discomfort. Sometimes when a person is ill for a long time you do a lot of your grieving before they actually go, grieving for the person they were before. Being with family and supporting each other like I'm sure you are will help you all through this.
