FOFA #957 – Rock the Runway Ronnie
Standard Podcast:
Standard Podcast:
Chicago born model Ronnie Kroell made it to the top two in the first season of Bravo’s hit reality tv show “Make Me a Supermodel.” His midwestern good looks, sparkling smile and unabashed honestly about his sexuality made him a viewer favorite.
His intense friendship with fellow contestant, the straight prison guard Ben DiChiara, became a focal point of the show and often out-shined the public interest in the competition itself.
Ronnie joins us here to today to talk about how reality TV made him a better person, being betrayed by his porn star escort boyfriend and why embracing your imperfections makes you beautiful.
Plus, questions for Ronnie from you listeners on the Feast of Fun Facebook page:

Photos by Boris Kravchenko and others. Click through for photo credit.
In case you were wondering, Ronnie is all that. His physical attractiveness is matched by his razor sharp wit, eloquence and willingness to poke fun at himself. Ronnie’s going to go far because he’s flexible, takes the work seriously but doesn’t take himself too seriously. I was totally charmed, and he’s single!
Just look how good he looks in our new “Canary” t-shirts:
Is your son trying to say he is gay when he paints a 60 foot long penis on the roof of your home?
A little person is saved by little dog in a little country.
And Anne Hathaway is set to play gay icon Judy Garland in the Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.

Gigi’s back boys! Our deluxe and delovely club-kid turned mother of two and visual artist is starting a new art group in Chicago, the Salon des Artistes Indépendants.
Gigi and other artists decided to come together to form the Salon to produce a gallery effect that wasn’t tethered to a certain theme or limited in scope. The Salon des Indépendants is basically a fancy French word for an outsider artist collective.
Gigi and her friends are sick of being told that their art is great but that it “really isn’t what we had in mind” by gallery owners so they mounted this first event.
It is by invitation only so the only way you are going to get an invite is if you email us and we plead your case to Gigi. She’s tough and she doesn’t want you drinking all her PBR, so be convincing of your love for art and we’ll see what we can do. I can’t make any promises though.

Are you looking at these wonderful pictures Fausto took of Gigi? She really is a supermom model. Gigi is so creative that she took one of our Digitally Delicious t-shirts and made a wonderfully tight-fitting black dress out of it. Hot!
Her daughter hates when she shaves her head but we think she is so lovely bald. Now, her daughter doesn’t really mind that her mom shaves her head, she just likes it when she wears a wig on it.
America, the U.S. Space Program needs your help! NASA is asking it’s visitors to the Houston Space Center to donate samples of their urine to help test out a new type of space toilet. This is kind of embarrassing. I’m sure in intergalactic space that aliens are laughing at us. Come on, Mars’ slogan after all is “Mars Needs Women” and ours is “Earth Needs Pee.” in reality though, nothing is like pee except pee. Pee has certain qualities that just can’t be reproduced so if they are going to get space toilets to work properly, they have to use the right stuff.
It seems fish are all over the news these days. Scientists have found that most animals (including our own species) ability to communicate using sound draws its origins to the grunts and chirps made by fish! The neural network that forms our speech center was created millions and millions of years ago. Even today some fish still use grunts to attract a mate.
Meanwhile in New York, one fish was taking this talking thing a bit to far. A talking carp predicted the end of the world. A fish that was destined for the knife proclaimed in Hebrew that the end was nigh and that now was the time to repent. Oy veh! The fish mongers didn’t take heed of the vociferous carp and it ended up becoming the Jewish delicacy gefilte fish. It could be worse.
Catfish walking down the street is not an everyday occurrence but it’s not unheard of in Florida. A woman saw a catfish trudging across her street and thought it was odd but then she looked further on and saw some thirty catfish emerging from the sewer, cross the street and kept on moving. The catfish used their dorsal fin to propel them much like we use our legs.
So there we have it, our speech, our fear of the almighty and the ability to walk all come from fish.
The voice inside your head that tells you to go for it- Feast of Fools.

The podcast that calls and calls until it gets it right-Feast of Fools!
Getting a hold of celebrities is difficult, especially when you call the wrong number. It’s very nice when the person on the other end of the line is polite though. Leave it to the Canadians to be like that. They’re just happy to get a phone call, even if it’s a wrong one.
When we finally get out and proud comedian Elvira Kurt on the phone, we are surprised that she has become a lesbian dad to a real live human baby. We never find out the name of the baby but we are glad that Elvira gets to experience the joy of parenthood since so much of her act is based on her growing up. That’s the best thing about parenting, you get to put your kid through all the things your parents put you through.
In her act, Elvira channels the spirit of her mother, Irene, a bleak Hungarian immigrant. Elvira practically becomes Irene who has a think accent and always sees the dark side of things. For Irene, life is hard, bleak and everything you love will break you heart and disappoint you. Elvira claims that the Eastern European stereotype of despair and gloom is based on her mother.
We chat with Ms Kurt about Girls School, an all-girl comedy movement. It seems that girls in girls schools perform better than girls in co-ed schools so they figure that girls on an all girl comedy tour would perform better without men. It’s sort of an comedy version of the Michigan Womyn’s Festival.
Our lovely Gem Sweater Diva and a FoF favorite guest Leslie Hall performed in the review. She even stayed at Elvira’s house. Did you know Leslie has a tail? She doesn’t really but Elvira says that she leads a “marsupial” lifestyle. We think she means “nocturnal,” but you never know, so don’t be surprised if you see Leslie hanging from a tree someday.
Elvira is a widely successful Canadian comedian both north and south of the border. She’s made many TV appearances and even hosted her own talk show in Canada. You can find out more about Elvira at her website.
A big thanks to Nick for tirelessly working to bring celebrities like Elvira Kurt on the show!

Why do we need to a show on a Gay Guide to Chicago? We often get the question from our listeners who plan to come to the Windy City for some good gay fun; “Dear Fausto and Marc-I’m coming to Chicago and I want to know what to do and where to go.”
It’s a difficult question to answer because Chicago has so much to offer to so many different types of people. We usually ask people what they are into and proceed form there. We’d hate to to tell someone to go ice skating at Millennium Park and later find out they suffer from pagophobia, which is the fear of ice. Now who would be afraid of ice? What do they do at cocktail bars? But that’s the great thing about phobias- they are totally irrational.
What is not is irrational is the desire to come to Chicago, “Chitown,” “The City of Broad Shoulders,” “Hog Butcher to The World,” “The City That Works” or as Studs Terkel calls it “Home of the Gayest Podcast in The World” (just kidding about the Studs part. Not sure which stud said that.)
Gay and straight Chicago has a lot to offer to the GLBT traveler. So much in fact that we are bringing in the big guns- Kathie Bergquist and Robert McDonald, authors of A Field Guide to Gay and Lesbian Chicago.
This book is a must read for anybody contemplating visiting Chicago. Not only is it a great general guide that will appease your straight friends and give them all the info they would need for a totally hetero travel experience, but it gives the low-down on all that is on the down-low.
Join us as we talk about our favorite gay bars and restaurants and spots to visit in this fabulous town. What makes a shoe store gay? What makes a gay-borhood gay? What makes anything gay for that matter?
The podcast that is the blinking disco light at the end of a dark tunnel- Feast of Fools.

Our beloved Jo-Jo Baby, who works as a doll maker, club kid, artist, stylist and drag queen went onto eBay to look for mannequins. He found a guy who lives in his neighborhood who was selling three full-sized vintage African-American female mannequins- Jo-Jo just had to have them and made an appointment to view them.
Although Jo-Jo was expected, there was no one to greet him at the back door upon his arrival so he entered into what was the kitchen. On the stove sat a large boiling pot. Always the curious sort, Jo-Jo spied into the cauldron and to his surprise he saw an actual human skull rolling about with some flesh still on it! Yes, a human skull.
At that point, the owner of the mannequins came into the room and saw Jo-Jo looking nervous and tried to calm him down by saying “It’s okay, it’s from Tibet.”
What would you do in this situation?
We would have run away, but Jo-Jo REALLY wanted those three mannequins, so he followed the man into his basement to retrieve the dummies. He is that committed to his art that he’d have risked his own head by following a strange man who had a head in a pot boiling on his stove to get what he needed to do what he does. Wow. When Divine shouted “Who wants to die for art?” in John Water’s film Female Trouble, Jo-Jo certainly would have been the first to jump up and be shot by the gun-wielding trampoline-bouncing drag queen.
Jo-Jo survived the encounter and his friends, who could barely believe his story, convinced him to go to the police. Afterwards, Jo-Jo spent the entire next day talking to news reporters and camera crews from his studio in Wicker Park in Chicago. We were lucky to chat him at the end of a long day.
Join us as Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós travel to the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago to talk with Jo-Jo in his studio about this incredible story. His friends from the band Black Box Fever were over at the studio as well. Check them out and we might play their music real soon. We’re also counting down the days until Law and Order turns this story into one of their “shows ripped from the headlines.”
How will this affect his costumes? Will he sleep at night? Is Jo-Jo going to be all-right? Find out on today’s Feast of Fun podcast.
There’s no bones about it- it’s the Feast of Fun!
Click here for photos of Jo-Jo’s Wicker Park studio and his infamous mannequins.

Interview with British writer Grant Stoddard who wrote a colum on Nerve.com called “I Did it for Science” where he went on assignments exploring the outlandish, extreme or unusual in sex.
Grant Stoddard was the kind of geeky intern everyone made fun of but yet still wanted to get in the sack.
The editors for the online magazine Nerve.com thought it would be hilarious to have their intern go on assignments exploring the outlandish, extreme or unusual in sex.
And thus the column “I Did It for Science” was born. After three successful years Grant left the magazine amid talks of Viacom wanting to turn his stories into a television show, but then the pilot never came to fruition.
Today we’re talking with the “accidental sex-tourist” Grant Stoddard about his book “Working Stiff: The Misadventures of an Accidental Sexpert.”
Listen as Grant shares his sordid tales trying out a broad range of sexual fetishes like infantilism, sploshing, latex shrink wrapping, bondage and making out with twelve gay men in a bar while his girlfriend watched.
Did we mention this guy identifies himself as straight so far?

No hold bared interview with one of the world’s most famous drag queens, Lady Bunny.
Even though we poke a lot of fun at Lady Bunny, we hold her in high regard as a gay entertainment legend. Listen to this in-depth interview where Bunny explains how she comes up with her material, why she dresses the way she does and why her mama is so gosh darn proud of her son/daughter.
[Originally posted on December 20, 2005.]
Subversive and perversive,THE Lady Bunny joins us today to talk about her debut DVD “X-Rated: For X-tra Retarded” a video collection of her greatest hits from her nightclub comedy act.
From her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Lady Bunny moved to Atlanta to go to Georgia State University. She then later moved to New York City to become part of a vibrant community of drag performers in the 1980s. She still resides in NYC but you can catch her act all over the world.
Lady Bunny’s probably best known for organizing and founding the New York City Outdoor Drag Festival Wigstock, which in 1995 became the subject of a documentary “Wigstock The Movie” directed by Barry Shills.
In addition to emceeing the annual Wigstock event for over 20 years she’s a well known DJ, promoter, and comedian.
Bunny’s blog is a sharp, politically aware and at times loopy take on current affairs and cultural issues. It is truly extraordinary.
Listen to Lady Bunny talk about Pamela Anderson and the Comedy Central Roast, the politics of drag and her former roommate RuPaul, and her mother Lady Becky, who threatens to run onto the stage and steal the show with her tambourine. Wouldn’t that be a sight!

How many are in your party? For some people monogamy is just right, but for a growing number of people, open relationships is where they find true happiness.
We are raised on fairy tales of a handsome prince rescuing a fair maiden and then they live happily ever after, but how close is this image to real life?
As gay people, we try to reinterpret that image of monogamous marriage in our fight for gay rights and marriage equality. There is even a new study that shows that GLBT youth want to be married and have kids by the age of 30.
How many people are truly satisfied by having one lover for their entire life?
Tristan Taormino, award-winning author, columnist, pornographic film director joins us to talk about her new book Opening Up: A guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships.
Tristan studied over a hundred polyamorous people, in a sort of Kinsey Report on non-manogamy. Tristan interviewed in person, over the phone and by email, people who were content and settled, and others who were at a crossroads in their relationships.
She discovered that all the people engaging in this lifestyle “exude an above-average level of sexual and emotional satisfaction -something that in my experience and observation seems to elude a lot of people.”
So how do you convince your wife to have a three way with the nanny, or the pool boy?
Well, it can be a very difficult topic to bring up because relationships are often viewed as sacred and some people are not going to react well to even bringing the topic up. Tristan recommends you start slow and put little feelers out there to see if they are the same wavelength. Of course, you have to make sure the person you are currently involved with has good self esteem otherwise you are in for a lot of trouble and soul searching.
Join us as we chat with Tristan about the tips and tricks on open relationships. We talk about how you design an open relationship, the pitfalls of an nonmonogmay, keeping it fresh five or ten years later and what to do if one person is kinky and they other is not.
There is a lot to take into consideration if you are going to turn your relationship into an open one. For example, what do you do if one person is attracted to it and the other isn’t? Is coming out as polyamorous like coming out of the gay closet? What do you do when someone reacts negatively to your identity? And what about the children, do the kids even care?
Tristan Toarmino is the niece of famous American author Thomas Pynchon, so of course we just have to ask her what he thinks of her work.
