We like to joke that the masking fetish is really for lazy trannies who don’t want to go through the trouble of putting on make up. It’s fun to say but it may not be true.

Everyone Forever described the desire for masking as “from the wearer’s point of view, the mask provides an opportunity to be completely surrounded by the powerful smells and tactile qualities of latex. They can heighten sensitivity and fear/excitement in the way leather and rubber sensory-deprivation hoods used in BDSM scenarios do. And because many of the maskers combine the mask with tight-fitting corsets and layered clothing, there can also be an element of containment or bondage.”

But why the feminine element? What do you think the real attraction to masking is?

FOF #770 – Obsession with Candy

 Standard Podcast [54:03m]:

Josh Kilmer Purcell has a new book out- "Candy Everybody Wants"Some of the most popular queer content found online and in traditional media is our collective fascination with famous actors, musicians and public figures. Why do gay men obsess on it so, and why does this type of content so appealing?

candy-wants.jpgOn today’s show writer and former drag queen Josh Kilmer-Purcell, well known for his best selling autobiography “I am Not Myself These Days” talks about his new novel “Candy Everybody Wants.”

In the novel Josh tells the story of a celebrity-obsessed gay teenager Jayson Blocher who leaves his life in the Midwest for the glamor of New York City, only to find that fame isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be.

Although he says the book isn’t about himself, you can read into the obvious parallels from his previous book “I am Not Myself These Days” where he chronicles his move to New York City from the Midwest to become a well-known drag queen. The book shares his passion for 80s pop culture, as references to campy nighttime soap operas like Dynasty, Dallas and Falcons Crest decorate the story line.

Josh’s writings always make for a great summer read, so it’s no coincidence that his book was released in April. If you live in Milwaukee, WI, go check him out tonight at Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop @7:00 pm, 2559 N. Downer Ave.

Fausto Fernós uses Josh Kilmer-Purcel's new book "Candy Everybody Wants" as a sun magnifier Marc Felion and Josh Kilmer-Purcell are best pals

Dr. Brent RidgeJoin us as we talk about the farm his partner Dr. Brent Ridge and he live on during the weekends and the famous goat milk soap they make and sell. The website for the farm seems so cozy, it makes you just want to escape there for the weekend.

The Beekman 1802 MansionIf you think it looks a bit like a gay version of Martha Stewart, you’re right to see the influence! Josh’s hubby to be is a regular on Martha’s daytime TV show where he talks about healthy liviing when he’s not working as a doctor at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

So the question everybody is asking gay media power couples like Josh and Brent are- now that it’s legal in California and the marriages will be honored in New York City, will you be officially tying the knot? Can we come to your wedding? You just know they will have great homemade goat-milk soap as wedding favors.

But will his right-wing gal pal Shirley Phelps come to the ceremony? Seriously, Josh is an advocate that gays should be happy that the Phelps family is so loud and proud in their anti-gay rhetoric, after all, they force people to stand up for gay rights or look like lunatics. Last time Josh was on our show we had a double date with him and Shirley Phelp and lets just say the results were flabbergasting.

Also- a computer program written by a evolutionary anthropologist suggests religious beliefs may be a product of evolution, saying that it might be evolutionarily advantageous for non-believers to support people who believe in non-verifiable data, since in the long term this may keep the “tribe” intact and help win bloodthirsty struggles.

But in the modern day of hi-tech warfare and our ability to destroy the world, religious beliefs might actually prove to be lethal for us all.

A shining beacon in the darkness- Feast of Fools.

FOF #769 – Madonna, Ben and Us

 Standard Podcast [49:35m]:

Timbadonna
Ben’s back in town to perform at Mary’s Attic this Friday and Saturday and we highly recommend the show.

We chat with Ben about his FAME moment when he started posing for “artistic” photos and wound up naked with only his ukelele to cover his manhood.

Madonna’s was awfully courageous to do a collaboration with Justin Timberlake, after all, the last diva to share the stage with him had a wardrobe malfunction that left her titty a poppin’ in front of millions of eyes.

We borrowed some of Madonna’s courage and took on her invitation to create our own cover and video of the song, “Four Minutes.”

Madge is picking the “best ones” to feature in a TV special. We’re SO wanting to be in this. Will it happen? Only if you believe in faeries.

The controversial memorial to the the gay victims of the Holocaust was unveiled in Berlin. The memorial is simple grey rectangular stone and features a video clip of two men kissing.

Some people are comforted that the memorial is ready for the 75th anniversary of the Nazis raid and book burning of the Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute, which was run, of course by Magnus Hirschfeld, an early gay activist. The Institute advocated sex education, contraception, the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, women’s emancipation, worldwide civil rights and the social acceptance for gay and transgender people in a time when most people couldn’t even begin to discuss these things.

This raid on the Institute signaled the beginning of the persecution of gays under Nazism and some people say that the famous pictures and archival newsreel film of Nazi book-burnings are usually of Hirschfeld’s library ablaze.

On a local note, Henry Gerber, founder of Chicago’s Society for Human Rights in 1924, the first gay rights organization in the United States, was in contact with the Hirschfeld Institute and was inspired by the German homophile emancipation movement. The local gay and lesbian Gerber-Hart library, is partly named after him.

Join us as we chat about twins separated at birth suing for damages and our cover of Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland’s new song “Four Minutes.” Hey!

Van Man's Fan ArtWe also open up Van Man’s fan art, is awesome- I want to collect all the fan art and do an art exhibition in a year from now, so please send all your paintings, collages, and drawings to :

I can appreciate all types of drag, even the girls who go for the beaded gowns and Dynasty-era styling. This type tends to be a little too serious, but I will bow down to their effort, dedication and attention to detail. The opposite end of the drag spectrum is what I really love, Skag Drag. I think the first time I ever heard the term was from the late artist Jerome Caja. (more…)

 Standard Podcast [46:21m]:

Amanda and Louise Ever wonder what Amanda Steinstein was like in high school? Pretty much the way she was today. Surprise surprise!

Join us for a very special Feast of Fools as Amanda is reunited twenty years later with her high school gal pal Louise who has since become a man named Lukas.

Lukas compares discovering what his true gender to being hit by a truck. A bit violent perhaps, but we get his drift- it was a irreconcilable life changing awakening that he really had to be a guy.

We talk with Lukas about what happened to the butch dykes and sissy nellies of yesteryear? Is trans just a better way of explaining the same idea or what? We laugh when Lukas calls bull dykes antiques as thought the term has become obsolete.

Of course, Amanda is still hung up about the pregnant man and thinks that is strange to be pregnant and be called a man.

Did Louise have a crush on Amanda in high school and does Lukas have one on her today?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Blossoming every day into a beautiful bouquet of flowers- Feast of Fools.

FOF #762 – But I’m a Cheerleader

FOF #762 – But I’m a Cheerleader

 Standard Podcast [47:30m]:

MaryLaPierre-RickyMartel-iTunesGive me and F! Give me an O! Give me another F! What does that spell? A-W-E-S-O-M-E P-O-D-C-A-S-T.

I know it’s a bit much, but bear with me. On today’s show we’re cheering our little lungs out for pride, yes, pride because California’s Supreme Court declared that gay couples in the nation’s most populous state can marry– a monumental victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony.

We have MUCH to celebrate. It’s always exciting to see the dominoes of gay rights inevitably fall in a good direction.

Also, what’s very funny is that CNN had their “Dewey Defeats Truman” moment when they aired the wrong story, announcing the California Supreme Court ruling against the gays and lesbos.

I’ve worked in news media for over ten years and I know a lot of news stories are written and developed with both results prepared ahead of time. It is wonderful to see one of the big titans get it 100% wrong.

Oh happy day!

On today’s show we brought some cheerleaders to celebrate in the joy, Mary La Pierre and Ricky Martel of the Chicago Spirit Brigade, a fundraising cheerleading group that performs at just about every gay thing that happens in the Midwest.

IMG_4217-cleaning Mary helps Ricky get all nice and clean

Listen as we talk with Mary and Ricky about the ridiculousness of vegan sugar, where to meet DILF’s in Chicago and odd biological phenomena, like the gecko who got trapped inside a chicken’s egg.

faustollyDolly Parton is WAY pissed off, since shock jock Howard Stern edited her new audio book to make her say all sorts of filthy things, including her taste for “n-word cock” and that “Kenny Roger’s beard smells like boy’s cum.”

The Howard Stern show regularly uses altered clips from “Star Trek” actor George Takei, William Shatner, Oprah Winfrey and others.

As unsettling this may be, it’s also great publicity for Dolly’s new book and is sure to guarantee a rise in book sales. Is Dolly faking it or is she sincerely mad? Who knows, but remember, Don Imus lost his job for calling black women basketball players names on his show. Will Howard Stern fall from grace over his folly with Dolly?

Either way, Dolly has issued her own response, saying: “If there was ever going to be a lawsuit, it’s going to be over this… just wanted you to know that I am completely devastated by this.”

We take the time to give you the lines that sound divine because they rhyme- Feast of Fools.

FOF #756 – Chris Crocker Tells on You

FOF #756 – Chris Crocker Tells on You

 Standard Podcast [1:01:35m]:

Chris CrockerChris Crocker turned to the internet to escape the torment of being chased by gangs of boys at the mall.

The internet helped him connect with the greater world around him when he couldn’t create a gay-straight alliance in his school and he left to be home schooled. To grow up a gay, eccentric and flamboyant teen has never been easy especially in a small conservative town in Tennessee.

If it weren’t for the internet where would Chris Crocker be?

Today Chris is one of the most watched and imitated video bloggers online. His iconic video of himself weeping and imploring the public to “Leave Britney Alone” made him a household name.

Chris’ videos represent the dramatic change we’re seeing in how we create and consume media. Chris’ videos are just as popular as the YouTube Presidential debates or the evening news. For millions of people everywhere, his opinion matters.

Despite this, old media companies are threatened by Chris popularity because of his bold desire to express himself at any cost. They can’t control him and he doesn’t need them.

Chris Crocker and a big giant V Chris Crocker takes on the Bible - who will win? Chris Crocker looking fierce

It’s easy to question the authenticity of Chris’ videos because he’s just that good. He’s eerily in touch with his dark emotions and quickly cuts through the hypocrisy of the “haters” with his wit and words.

Chris Chrocker looking eerily looking like Matthew Sheppard“Leave Britney Alone” proves to be one of the most emotionally over the top videos I’ve ever seen online. I believe Chris cried not so much for Britney Spears but rather to express the pain and suffering he endured having gone through the hell of homophobia as a teenager. In many ways, Chris Crocker represents the tortured gay youth who fought back and lived.

Chris Crocker really is a huge fan of Britney Spears, even though she has conservative leanings and a complete lack of interest in gay rights of any kind. Remember, she was FOR the War in Iraq and said in many interviews that we should “stand by our President” despite his reckless policies.

Chris sees something bigger inside of Britney. He believes her to be a liberal person trapped by the conservative world around her.

Chris Crocker is a divaPeople can’t leave Britney alone or any other tragic celebrity for that matter because they help us cope with our everyday problems. When we see someone richer, more attractive and more powerful than us struggling to hold on, it makes it easy to come to peace with our place in the world.

On today’s show Chris Crocker joins us to talk in-depth about his popular video blog, his passion for following people’s horoscope and how he may team up with Puerto Rican TV astrologer Walter Mercado to reach a hip, young new audience. We also talk with Chris about how he personally deals with the vicious hate online and offline, what he thinks of all those parody videos of his work and where in Los Angeles you should hang out if you want to hook up with Chris.

And we put to rest the rumors surrounding Chris’ HIV/AIDS conspiracy as a government biological weapon gone wrong and being vilified for simply being himself and being good at it!

FOF #754 – Work the Runway Steven

FOF #754 – Work the Runway Steven

 Standard Podcast [1:11:56m]:

Steven Rosengard on the Feast of FoolsSteven Rosengard was the first Chicago based designer to be on Project Runway, the fabulous reality television show where contestants compete against each other to create the best clothes. Their designs are judged and one or more of the contestants are eliminated each week.

Project Runway Season Four was filled with a lot of great talent and we are glad Steven got as far as he did. He was “auffed” or kicked off of the show after re-styling a wedding dress of a women who have lost a significant amount of weight.

When given the challenge to create a new outfit out of a woman’s former favorite “fat clothes,” Steven was given the impossible task of transforming a woman’s wedding dress. As soon as I saw that dress, I knew whomever got it was going to lose.

The judges said that Steven turned her “wedding dress into a funeral dress.”

Still, Steven doesn’t shy away from talking about his design choices and explaining his reasons for making it.

Don't laugh! Fausto shows designer Steven Rosengard his own fasion creation Marc and Steven wrestle over a cocktail

Steven is a blast! We had a lot of fun with this Chi-town fashionista. He loved our idea for “Project Runway: The Musical!”

Just imagine the incomparable Elizabeth Berkley as chief “auffer” Heidi Klum and Bea Arthur as style guru Tim Gunn singing the breakout hit “Make it Work! Make it Work! Make it Work!” It’ll also feature pop sensation Gloria Estefan as Latina Nina Garcia and a dancing orange as the orange skin toned judge Michael Kors.

Of course all the contestants would play themselves and there would be awesome fashion show montages throughout the show. Jack Mackenroth is already working on his routine. Check him out in this over the top Flashdance number.

Steven RosengardSince leaving Project Runway, Steven has spent a lot of time attending charity functions. He’s hosting Make a Statement: Design for the Cure, which showcases top fashions from Chicago’s favorite boutiques and rising designers, to raise HIV/AIDS awareness among Chicago’s 21 – 35 demographic. Presented by the AIDS Foundation of Chicago Junior Board, the event will feature models wearing t-shirts with such statements as: “Condoms: For Wieners Not Wallets,” “AIDS Apathy Makes Your Ass Look Big,” and “HIV Only Needs One Chance.”

Listen as we chat with Steven about the future of Project Runway and how its move to another network will effect viewership. Is Heidi nicer on air than she is off air?

Steven continues to further his design work. If you’d like him to make you a dress just contact him through his website StevenRosengard.com
