Deaf since the age of 10, Terry Galloway grew up to be one of the funniest performers of her generation.
Calling herself a “modern medical accident,” Terry’s hearing loss, vision problems and childhood hallucinations came as result of an experimental antibiotic given to her mother during the Cold War in Germany. As a 10-year-old self-proclaimed “child freak,” she acted out her fury at her circumstances by faking her own drowning at a camp for crippled children.
Since then, she’s used writing and performance to reveal her queer identity and her silent, quirky world populated by many unforgettable characters.
In Austin, Texas, Terry co-founded the much loved and long-running comedy show, Esther’s Follies which was considered for a run on off Broadway by the producers of Saturday Night Live.
Her new memoir, “Mean Little deaf Queer” recounts some of her life’s most horrific and funny moments.
She’s in Chicago to kick off “Fresh Squeezed” a series of offbeat performance-based events at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater.

Larry La Fountain, professor of queer studies at the University of Michigan talks about his new book Queer Ricans, an exploration of the cultural expression of Puerto Rican queerness and how sexuality has shaped and defined the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
Every year thousands of Puerto Ricans emigrate from the the Island of Puerto Rico to other parts of the world in search of a better life. Their quest mirrors that of many queer folks who travel from their hometowns to other places to express their identity.
But with modern times, we see that this type of travel isn’t always a one way trip and now we see people are living the life they want in their hometown or anywhere they choose.
On today’s show we’re talking to the ever giddy and delightful Larry La Fountain-Stokes, professor of queer studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His new book Queer Ricans-Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora, explores the cultural expression of Puerto Rican queerness and how sexuality has shaped and defined the Puerto Rican experience in the United States.
In his book Larry examines the lives of queer artists of the 60s through the present day whose work is flavored by their Puerto Rican-ness, whether living on the island or in major urban Puerto Rican communities.
Listen as we discuss how Puerto Ricans’ love of the derriere has influenced American culture by giving the backside the respect and admiration it so greatly deserves.

Interview with with performer and writer E. Patrick Johnson about his book “Sweet Tea” a collection of real-life stories on the lives of gay black men living in the South.
The American South, with its complex legacy of slavery, segregation and religious fervor has created a rather unique social structure.
African American gay men have learned to navigate this conservative environment to not only survive but to thrive in the small towns and big cities of the South.
While at a friend’s cookout, writer and performer E. Patrick Johnson encountered a group of older gay black Southern gentlemen sitting around telling stories about what it was like to be gay back in the day. Wanting to hear more about their experience, E. Patrick embarked on an adventure, traveling the Southland, interviewing over 70 gay black men of all ages.
Today E. Patrick Johnson joins us to talk about his book “Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South,” his collection of the funny, touching and fascinating stories he found.
E. Patrick is now touring the country performing “Pouring Tea” his one man show based on the book.
Listen as we talk about the complex relationship between gay men and their communities including the ties to their churches and their families.
