(CNN) — Robert Winn met his wife, Christine, in college. He was a fraternity boy. She was a sorority girl. Early in their relationship, he made a confession, a thorny secret he camouflaged from his closest family and friends.

The truth sputtered out awkwardly.

Sensing his nervousness, she speculated he would announce he was sick — or perhaps dying?

He told her he was bisexual.

On the surface, Robert Winn, now 40, and Christine Winn, 41, appear to be like any other blissfully married heterosexual couple. They boast nearly 18 years of monogamous marriage. He’s a well-respected physician, who works with the LGBT community in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She’s a successful hospital administrator.

The couple says they’ve grown closer over time, but like any marriage, two people can have differences — including sexual orientation. Christine Winn is straight, and she has been supportive of her husband, who is openly bisexual.

“I don’t think about it [his bisexuality] as a part I have to accept,” she said. “It’s just a part of him like any other husband who loses their socks on the floor or doesn’t take the trash out.”

Her husband feels a sexual and emotional attraction toward men and women. While he fantasizes about Angelina Jolie just as his straight male friends might do, he is also attracted to Brad Pitt.

Here’s the Study

Consumer Reports says it purchased 15 protein powders and drinks mainly in the New York metro area or online and tested multiple samples of each for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.

The results showed a considerable range, but levels in three products were of particular concern because consuming three servings a day could result in daily exposure to arsenic, cadmium, or lead exceeding the limits proposed by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (a public standards-setting authority.)

Andrew Shao, senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement industry group, told Consumer Reports that protein powders and drinks are a safe option, even for teens and pregnant women — groups frequently targeted for nutrition boosting, NPR reported.

A big part of the problem is that health drinks or energy drinks aren’t requited by law to be tested for these types of poisons before they are sold to the public. So until Uncle Sam starts testing these products for these types of poisons, you’re at the mercy of the manufactuer.

I’m kind of at a loss here, because I personally love protein supplementation and an energy drink sometimes hits the spot. Am I going to die from my “healthy” lifestyle?

On a positive note, three brands that scored well (no poisons detected) in the test were: Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydro Whey (Vanilla), Six Star Muscle Pro Whey Protein (Vanilla) and Solgar Whey To Go Protein, also in vanilla.

In Chicago, health care advocates and people with common sense people are outraged over the Illinois Department of Public Health’s bizarre ad campaign targeting gay men called “He’s the One.” And no, it’s not “He’s the one,” as in “Ooh la la, he’s Prince Charming,” it’s “He’s the one, that will infect you.”

The ridiculous tag line and the spooky montage of men’s faces cobbled together like a Franken Gay monster in the ad are provoking ridicule and angry responses. What was the ad campaign supposed to accomplish, and why did it even run in the first place, in a gay newspaper of all places?

When I saw this ad on a bathroom wall in a gay bar in Chicago, I thought it was for a dating site and didn’t think much of it. It was just a weird composite of different men with the tag line “He’s the One” and a promise that if you register for the site you could win an iPad.

It wasn’t until weeks later that I saw the ad in print with the added message “He’s the one, that could infect you.” I was mortified that they’d try to send a safe sex message in this sneaky way and demonize gay men as monsters. But what’s even more appalling that it was paid for by the Illinois Department of Public Heath.

One commenter (TrickyToro) over at Lifelube said it’s reminiscent of Frankenstein monster, equating HIV positive men as monsters but “just like the story, the villagers or the authors of this campaign are the real monsters.”

We know so many brilliant and responsible people working in Public Health that it seems unreasonable that this would even make it out of the boardroom. Thankfully, the website is down and I’m sure someone has been sent out to the bars in Boystown to take down the ads.

We’re all about ad campaigns encouraging the use of condoms, but not make people think of gays as sick.

Here’s a lighter side to the scary ad campaign. I’m sure the eye on the left is that of Jeff Ramone, The Ungay Guy. At least the eyelashes and iris texture match perfectly. Don’t they usually find people out of town for these type of ad campaigns?

And she has come up with some surprising results- in Southern Africa, the biggest HIV risk for men is to get married, but in Southeast Asia, the more sex that women have before marriage, the less likely HIV infections will occur overall.

It’s not always obvious how to reduce HIV infections and that’s why Elizabeth fights to make sure that good research gets translated into good government policy.

At the TED “ideas worth spreading” conference, Elizabeth dazzled the audience of influential people working in technology, entertainment and design by bringing up the idea that a great way to develop policy is to look at things from the point of view of people at risk- sex workers, drug users and gay men.

Callers who stopped to pay their final respects to the late Mr. Colón got a bit of a surprise. Instead of the traditional presentation of the body in a casket, Mr. Colón’s corpse, dressed in casual duds and sunglasses, was instead posed in a very lifelike position atop his Repsol-liveried Honda CBR600 F4. According to Puerto Rico’s Primera Hora newspaper, the motorcycle was given to the victim by his uncle, and upon Mr. Colón’s untimely demise, family members delivered the bike to the funeral home specifically for this unusual wake.

Hundreds of dollars were surely spent on these subscriptions and the results were minimal at best.  Dismal might be a better description.  When I stopped and looked at these subscriptions from the perspective of the return-on-investment I realized it was time to end them.  All of them.

I’d also written that the bar scene had become tiring and perhaps another waste of time and money.  Over the past year, the elimination and/or lessened patronage of these two traditional gay establishments left me wondering how I’d build and maintain some semblance of new social existence.

When discussing the over-all challenges in meeting interesting men with a straight, married colleague of mine, he suggested that keeping it simple was probably the best method.
“Walk up to someone that you find attractive and say, ‘I find you attractive and I’d like to buy you a drink.’”.  He went on to say that if his wife wouldn’t freak out over doing this simply as a way of meeting new people, he’d pursue this method himself.

Considering that I’ve typically been a fan of subtleties and nuance in just about every facet of my life, this ‘simple idea’ wasn’t the easiest to implement.  However, because this colleague is one of my trusted confidants, I figured I could trust him on this one.

So….in the past when I might be completely content sitting in a corner of a bar enjoying a beverage in solitude, I made myself belly-up to the bar and say hello to the people on either side of me.  I found this easier in one of my neighborhood bars because I knew the likelihood of talking to a neighbor would at least offer something in common from which to start a conversation.

And indeed, I began to meet new people.  Not for the sake of adding notches to the bedpost, but for the sake of just meeting new people.

My roommate was bemoaning similar experiences with on-line dating.  I told her that I’d removed all of my profiles and continued by saying, “If someone wants to know who I am, they’re going to have to strike up a conversation with me.”

This exact situation played out over the weekend.  I was in Chicago house-hunting and while there, taking in some of the cultural attractions.  It was a bit too early to call it a night so I stopped for a beer at Scot’s adjacent to the Montrose L stop.  With a reputation on Yelp as a solid, friendly neighborhood bar, it sounded like a good alternative to the thump and grind of Boystown.

It was Saturday night and there were only four others there, plus the bartender.  We were watching SNL and laughing out loud and bantering back and forth.  Just what one would expect from a neighborhood bar.  A few minutes later a couple more guys came in, sat down and starting chatting.

On of them bought me a beer, continued chatting and then said, “You seem like an interesting guy, could I take you out some time?”

It came across so naturally sincere that I found myself saying yes with virtually no hesitation.  He was on his way home, I was on my way home so we BP & G’d (BUMP’d iPhones and Giggled) and got in touch the next day.

Sunday afternoon rolled around and we met for coffee and strolled around Andersonville while enjoying good stories and laughter.  We talked about our on-line dating past.
“The same guys are on all the different sites,” he said.  “Essentially, you’re meeting no one because it’s the same people.”

Two guys with the same theories about on-line dating doesn’t make for a trend, but we have the feeling that guys would actually like to meet the old-fashioned way.  A beer, some conversation, a handshake and a chance to just get to know one another.

My chance encounter with a fine gentleman over the weekend helped me understand what I’d been missing and reaffirmed that keeping it simple actually works.

Joe has never been much into exercise, but I gave him a rather expensive multifunction machine for Christmas and installed it in the family room so he could watch the big-screen TV while working out. He started spending a reluctant 10 minutes a day on his new “toy.’’

When he complained that his jeans were too tight, I made a note to buy him some loose workout clothes. When he continued to mutter about having “nothing to wear,’’ I retorted that he could exercise naked for all I cared. Then he did just that — on the machine in his birthday suit and gym shoes.

He’s now using the machine, stark naked, each day for 45 minutes without any prodding, and he’s lost some weight. Our 12-year-old daughter has begun to “coach’’ his sessions, counting his reps and urging him on.

We’re not prudes. Our daughter has seen both her parents naked and insists it doesn’t bother her to watch Dad exercise in the buff. In fact, they joke about it. She started calling him a “Greek athlete.’’ Joe does have Greek ancestry, and he now insists the Greeks had it right and has no intention of dressing.

I’m torn. If I make him wear clothes, I worry he’ll stop exercising. Is naked exercise common? Is it dangerous? Is he some sort of closet pervert? Would some busybody consider this child abuse and have him arrested?

The haven’t really said what all the fuss is about but this guy who worked there 25 years ago seems to think he may know what’s up- that they were put on leave for transferring a grant, which can sometimes be incredibly large sums of money, to Northwestern University. Read about that here in “An Open Letter to the Board and Supporters of the Howard Brown Health Center,” and FYI, a “PI” is “The Principal Investigator,” the person who is chiefly responsible for carrying out the operations of a grant.

The CEO Cook resigned and WCT reports that “He cited internal disagreements about ongoing responsibilities and duties” but never with a direct quote, rather, he cites “personal family matters” as the reason for leaving. So what’s up, is it personal or professional?
