Looking around the SXSW Interactive’s first-ever LGBT panel, “Engaging the Queer Community”, [sic] I saw a shrunken pink-haired woman wearing steel-toed platform boots and green stockings walking past a large-nosed horn rimmed kid with horse teeth and acne scars, and I realized that even though we’re all adults now, we very much remain the theater fags and lunch geeks we were in high school—conflicted and sightly scared people looking for a voice. But why then are our personal stories so often trumped by the like of homophobic senators and, bless her, Lady Gaga?

Many a late night was spent AltaVistaing, typing in letters, words, phrases. What was I searching for? Resonance? Connection? Community? Luv? Similar seekers in the ether? “Lesbian Web pages.” “Dyke Austin.” “Queer Texas.”

Two important things happened in the mid-Nineties: I came out, and so did the Internet.

As Web ubiquity and gay cultural acceptance have each evolved in the 16 years hence, their realities, in my mind, are forever interfused. The rise of the Internet kick-started a coalescence of worldwide queer community. My personal coming out experience was certainly enhanced by the emergence of online communities – as were the experiences, connections, livelihoods, and survival of queers across the globe. And that’s still true for so many people.

“There are still places that exist where you can be fired for being gay. It boggles my mind,” says Trish Bendix, 26, Chicago freelance writer, blog editor of Logo/MTV’s AfterEllen.com, and panel moderator for SXSW Interactive’s Engaging the Queer Community, the first concertedly LGBT-themed panel ever at SXSW Interactive.

Yeehaw! We’ve been having a grand time meeting lots of great people and making some really great connections at the South by Southwest Media Conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. As part of the conference Fausto Fernós moderated and spoke at “Engaging the Queer Community,” a panel dealing with the issues that come up for LGBT bloggers and content creators (like podcasts and video blogging.)

Obviously, we only scratched the service in the hour long session, but the response was overwhelming. As the first ever queer panel of its kind for the 23 year old conference, it was a long time coming.

According to the organizers of the conference, the only reason a session or panel on LGBT online issues hadn’t been done before is because it never was submitted by anyone. So props out to Trish Bendix from After Ellen who had the idea, got all the panelists together and pushed for it to happen!

Being a part of this landmark session is important for the health of Feast of Fun as it introduces us to new partners, listeners and readers, but also because it allows us to share our expertise with others for increased visibility for gay people in not only at tech conferences, but on the internet at large.

We’ve lined up interviews with some of the hottest talent SXSW and Austin have to offer-

• Kerthy Fix- director of the brand new documentary that just premiered at SXSW- Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields.

Naturally, the townsfolk were dismayed when show members arrived in fur and began frolicking in the “white fluid” that began spewing out of the sculpture. Although I appreciate a good cock now and then, this probably wasn’t the best way to go about this stunt… but at least I have an idea of what to do for my next Christmas party.

This is a German game show. The girl is able to identify Star Wars Lego characters with her mouth. The host is dressed like The Doctor Who of the old time series and the girl is sitting in a Star Trek / Captain Kirk chair.

The Germans and the Japanese… you can’t beat them for Game Shows.

Every year in the spring, thousands of internet and filmmaking rock stars (and rock-star-rock-stars) gather in Austin, Texas for South by Southwest, the interactive, film, and music conference that originally began as a music festival in the late 80s. Today it’s a big deal, bringing the biggest names in the industry together with everyday people in a mixing of the minds, a delicious burrito full of culture and fun.

And we’re in the thick of it. My gal pal Trish Bendix and I are moderating “Engaging The Queer Community” an in-depth discussion with Bil Browning and Sinclair Sexsmith on how to make your blogs, twitters, podcasts and youtube videos fabulous.

We’re sifting through the issues of blogging from a queer identity or perspective. How do you get people interested and chatting you up without turning them into an angry mob? What about being in the closet as a blogger? How do you keep your site from being banned when you write about all that hot dirty sex you’ve been having?

How is new media changing how we push politicians and society forward towards embracing our rights?

Visiting a strip club when you first come out can be a very liberating experience as it validates your desire to look at other men. For Craig Seymour, he was so fascinated by his experience at the strip club, he did his college thesis on the subject of stripping and interviewed many male dancers and their clients. He eventually felt that if he was really going to know what it’s like to be one of them he’ll have to take it all off and work the pole.

The seedy clubs where Craig worked were famous for full-on nude men and he would spend hours working the crowd in his birthday suit to get just the right angle for his thesis. Now that’s research!

Craig put it all in his book “All I Could Bare: My Life in the Strip Clubs of Gay Washington, D.C” and he’s here today to talk about his experiences as a stripper, a professor and journalist.

Listen as Craig chats with us about the escalating costs of higher education, the changing face of LGBT journalism and why digital media is making it harder for conservative closeted politicians to lead double lives.

Look, I completely respect other people’s privacy, but once you’ve gotten the part and seven consecutive Emmy nominations and a win with your first nomination, you’re no longer auditioning. You’ve got the part. Time to be proud of who you are. And if you just so happen to be typecast… is that such an awful thing? Even if I were straight, I’d rather be the “go-to” person for playing gay than not have a fucking job… ya know, like 10% of America right now.

So the answer to the question of what more do I want, Sean, is that I want every gay kid growing up in the world right now to have a role-model to look up to. And what better role-model is there than a proud gay man playing a proud gay man on national television?

Brady is a right wing nut job. He needn’t worry about his conservative base. I don’t use nut job loosely. Brady is currently campaigning on–among other things–a strong “reform” platform–specifically touting campaign finance reform and term limits. One of the longest serving lawmakers in the Assembly, Brady voted against campaign finance reform bills numerous times, and also voted against a term limits bill. I’m confused…
