Comedy actress Bea Arthur, best known for her starring roles in the hit TV sitcoms. Maude and The Golden Girls. died of cancer over the weekend. She was 86.
Today we take look at the comedy legend’s work from her groundbreaking portrayal of wisecracking outspoken liberal in Maude, to her 1979 comedy special featuring a campy duet with Rock Hudson, to her role as the sarcastic Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls which elevated her to gay icon status.
Our fabulous pal Jason Smith joins us to share his stories about working the red carpet in New York City as a celebrity photographer.

YAY! Jason Smith is back! We miss him in Philadelphia, but it is good to hear him back on the show! I wonder if spent lots of time thinking of his jokes or if he cam up with them on the spot.. either way, they were so cute!
Really cool you guys are going to Miami. Thanks for the tribute to Bea Arthur and thank you Bea Arthur for being a classy, liberal, funny and spirited woman.
I was sad to thear that Bea died on Saturday. She will be missed for all the attention she put on social issues and helping others to recognize that there are REAL people who experience these issues on a daily basis. You also have to love the quit-wit she displayed on TV.

I was just about to go on stage with Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus this past weekend when I saw on Twitter that Bea Arthur had died… the news spread thru the chorus like wildfire, and we added a line to the show for our last show in her memory. So very sad… it’s amazing how much she meant to so many people.
Another interesting note about Janet DuBois of Good Times- she sang the theme song to “The Jeffersons.” “Fish don’t burn in the kitchen, beans don’t burn on da grill…”

Great show guys, loved the closing number. It reminded me of Rock Hudson’s biography in which he regretted the advice of a vocal coach early in his career who said he needed a more gravelly voice so catch a sore throat and go up a hill and shout your head off. Before that he used to enjoy singing and had a good voice.
