Those were some delicious house-brewed beers we had last weekend! Our coverage of Philly’s Beer Week continues with our in-depth key analysis of what makes the City of Brotherly love so rich in breweries and fantastic pubs.
Philadelphia loves LOVE so much so that it created an official “Love Park.” The former JFK Plaza located in Center City holds the ever so adorably cute Love sculpture made by 60s pop artist Robert Indiana.
Originally created for the Museum of Modern Art Christmas card in 1964, this iconic image later was turned into a US Postal Service stamp in 1973 and then into the sculpture in 1976. It was removed two years later when the city failed to pay Indiana for the sculpture, but public outcry over the removal brought back the sculpture permanently to the plaza.
Listen to today’s show as Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós talk about some of the great eclectic beers and breweries in Philadelphia.
City Tavern is recreation of a American colonial era inn where the staff serve you beer and food in costume. Marc got a chance to talk with Tom Kehoe, former wrestler and founder of Yard’s Brewing about some of the beers they are featuring at the City tavern. Look for the video of the beer tasting next week.
Tria Cafe served us the stunning Malhuer beer, produced in almost the same manner as champagne. For those of you who want an out of the ordinary celebratory beverage instead of champagne, I highly recommend considering ordering several cases of this beer for that special event.
I best can describe it as a glass of rich translucent custard with whipped cream on top. The beer’s delicate aroma was clean and crisp.
Tria likes to concentrate on three fabulous fermented foods- Beer, Wine and Cheese. They pair cheese with not only wine but with beer as well. Beer and cheese pair well because of the rich varieties available and their long shared history. The two food stuffs were traditionally created in the same environment so they have become more compatible over the course of centuries that these two were being made together. Also, unlike wine which comes from grapes, beer and cheese also come from the same source, grains, so they share the same root essence.
We just adored the pork meatballs in roasted poblano pepper sauce at London Grill. Go there for the wide assortment of different meatballs and get a pint of delicious Willy Sutton Ale named after the infamous bank robber who stopped by the London Grill after escaping from a nearby penitentiary before getting caught. Willie, when asked why he robbed all those banks purportedly replied “because that’s where the money is.” I wish he added a “duh!” on the end of that statement.
Triumph Brewing has a modern look in such an old part of Philly, but that is what makes the city fun and interesting- you have history right next to something new and splashy. We toured the brewery which is on the second floor of the establishment and we had fun clowning around. And Cara pictured to the left was asking for it!
We sat on the second floor and tasted a nice sampling of their house brews when the bartender accidentally made a glass washer spray us all! It was a hoot. Luckily I caught the water display on film. Don’t worry though, we didn’t get too wet.
Triumph also played host to our Meet ‘N Greet. We were delighted to meet up with some of the fabulous Philadelphia area listeners. We had such a wonderful time meeting all you in person. Thank you for coming and special thanks to DCRyan who came all the way from Washington, DC just to hang out with us. You get the prize for traveling the farthest. Check out all the hot pics of the night here.
Thanks again to Ashley and Crissie from Triumph Brewery for helping make the event run smoothly and for Jeff Guaracino from the GPTMC.
Be sure to check towards the second half of this podcast for our chat with Michael Fahver from Dock Street Beer and fellow foodie Tracy Bethune.
The podcast that’s just like a Philly cheesesteak sandwich: meety and cheesy- Feast of Fools.

Fun! I like when you go mobile. I have been to Philly before (it is close & easy to get to from NYC) & next time I\’m taking your \”travel tips!\”
I\’ve been to Philadelphia a few times for concerts and checked out the nightlife too, but I
never thought to try the beer ! Live and learn.
Boston is loaded with beer brew houses too, we even have a Ben Franklin running around town. He\’s kind of a
perv though.
I can confirm the genetic thesis which Mark mentioned.
I am the third son in my family and I am gay.
I have also gay friends who are the second, third or fourth child in their family.
WHAT the Hell???? there are no drag queens in Philly???? You didnt dig deep enough for the dirt boys!!
ps. I am an identical twin…one gay, one straight….what is the math on that????
ox, R-
pss. Did you see me on the cover of Nightspots Magazine??? I looked (Calpernia Adams intro), \”Stunning!\”
ox, R-
post the pic here
or in the forums
make sure you send a signed copy to Aurora!
You are sooo bad Marc….you know I love you more than my Luggage!!!!
ox, R-
I have a suggestion for a song about beer you could\’ve played! I have always loved \”I Spend My Last $10.00 (On Birth Control And Beer)\” by Two Nice Girls. Very folky. Though it\’s more about being depressed and drinking your worries away rather than bestowing the virtues of beer.
I loved the information on the many different kinds of beer you encountered in Philly. I\’m usually a import snob and have not tried much of the local fare, but this has encouraged me to be more adventurous. Good job, guys!
OH what great episodes! I dont drink much beer but now I want some! I forgot to post on yesterday\’s show about a song on Beer. BEER! by Psychostick. Beer is good!
I\’m not much of a beer drinker either but honestly about 3/4 of the way into the show I was craving one REAL BAD! I liked this show format– it was fun and silly and everything I love about FoF, but also somewhat educational. You can learn something at the Feast of Fools!
I\’m with Rick. I actually can\’t stand beer, but listening to this show makes me really want to try some!
How fantastic was Tracy? She seemed to know quite a bit about a lot of things. And you guys talking about Excel and keyboard shortcuts – that\’s me at my office. I get so frustrated with people who only use the mouse. I just want to scream sometimes.
Why would you wait til the second part to mention Timothy was a wrestler!!!!
Hook a brother up!
Good show guys, thanks for all the laughs and facts.
Ciao, Mark
What a great show guys. I\’m a major beer \’enthusiast\’ Love trying different styles of beer and brewery tours. I even brew at home. But it was great to hear other gay folks enjoying the expirience. I thought I was the only one.
I wanted to post a comment sooner about your Philly visit, but I had some trouble getting an account. Thanks, Marc, for getting one set up for me.
I lived in Philly from 1998 to 2002. I loved living there. There was always something to do. There was an abundant nightlife available. Lots of bars and bookstores. Pride was always a blast. You could go anywhere you needed to via SEPTA (the areas transit system of trains and buses) and/or a short cab ride. Taxi cab rates were very reasonable as they were regulated by the city. I owned a car, but I rarely drove it. I can\’t say the same for Atlanta where we have MARTA and cab fares are bit steep.
I had the pleasure of visiting both Ironhill Brewery and Monk\’s. Some of the best beer I\’ve ever had at both establishments. My friends and I always had a Happy Hour gathering at some local bar every Friday after work. That\’s the thing I miss most about Philly. There was a bar on almost every corner and very often a church right across the street. I suppose it was so you could go to confession after an evening of binge drinking. Very different from what you see growing up in the South.
Great shows on Philly\’s beer culture. I had never heard of the Gueuze style of beer. I had to do some research. I love Belgian beers, but I don\’t think the sour flavor is for me. Incidentally, it is pronounced GOO-za according to Wikipedia and several other sites. i would have pronounced GOOZ also the way it is spelled.
Fausto and Marc post so much content I can hardly keep up. A podcast that produces five days a week, and is consistently funny and informative is a rare treat. Thanks guys for all the hard work.
We love Philly, Jason Smith and the INCREDIBLE beer there. I really do wish I was in Philly drinking it now!
