RALEIGH, N.C. — More than a year after disclosing he is gay, Clay Aiken is speaking before a gay-rights event in his hometown.
Aiken will deliver a speech about gay rights this weekend at the Human Rights Campaign Carolinas gala in Raleigh, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday. Actress Meredith Baxter, who recently said she is a lesbian, also will deliver a speech.
The 31-year-old Raleigh native, pop singer and 2003 “American Idol” runner-up said he wrote his own speech after remarks provided for him proved too political, including a slam aimed at former President George W. Bush.
“I don’t feel like this is the place to be horribly politically charged and bash people and talk about the wrongs that have been done,” he said. “My goal is to be hopeful, that it’s time foreveryone to have equal rights.”

Standard Podcast [52:15m]:
Clay Aiken gay? You bet! And that’s okay.
The red-headed pop singer, best known as the second runner up in the second season of the TV singing competition American Idol came out of the closet as a gay man and is on the front cover of People magazine with his newborn son.
Aiken says that he “cannot raise a child to lie or hide things.” Which probably is a dig at his estranged father, Vernon Grissom.
Still many of the conservative straight women who make up part of his fan base are eerily silent about the news. If you check out fansites, hardly anyone is talking about the much anticipated revelation. Will coming out cost Clay Aiken his music career? Will his fans jsut out and out abandon him? Time will tell.
We think it’s great and want everyone who listens to the Feast of Fools to show their solidarity by buying at least ONE of Clay’s songs on the iTunes music store. Show your financial support folks. I recommend “Solitaire,” the song that made him a star on American Idol, while Marc suggests “Mary Did Ya Know” from his Christmas Album, for obvious reasons.
We’ve got two men to weigh in on the news- gay hip pop rapper Johnny Dangerous, talking about the costs of being open, embracing controversy and why dirty is the new black.
Plus we’ve got Clay Aiken’s ex- military man John Paulus who exploded into the national scene when he came forward with his tell all story and DNA evidence.
We chatted with John in August 2006 about his sexual encounter with Clay. So does John feels vindicated? Has Clay said anything to him?
If you haven’t heard Victoria Lamarr and Marc recreate their intimate adventure, check it out as they do Quarter Turns for everyone!
A hateful bumper sticker causes controversy in Australia- does hate speech have free speech rights?
Steven Spielberg matches Brad Pitts contributions to protect gay marriage in California and CNN walks out on Sarah Palin because the fundamentalist Vice Presidential candidate wont allow herself to be interviewed.
It’s not okay to love the Feast of Fools, it’s FABULOUS!
