Standard Podcast [44:43m]:
You saw him at the Oscars, now on today’s show we have longtime gay rights activist Cleve Jones talking about what it was like to walk the red carpet at the Academy Awards, dance with Madonna at the after-party and hold Dustin Lance Black’s hand during the momentous evening.
The Oscar win for the film Milk certainly gives the national gay rights moment a shot in the arm but can we leverage the movie’s success into a comprehensive bill that ensures equality for all Americans?
Here are some memorable quotes from the interview:
On being at the Oscars with Madonna and a room full of celebrities celebrating Milk:
“It was an odd sensation to be in a room full of people and the only face I did not recognize was my own!”
On what an average citizen can do to fight for equality:
“I always go back to Harvey Milk. The single most important thing that we must all do as individuals is to come out of the closet and reveal ourselves to our families, neighbors and coworkers and let people understand who we are. I think the greatest obstacle that remains that individual queer people have about coming out.”
“The second step is to finally demand that straight people really get with the program and show their support. I think Sean Penn’s speech was very helpful in that regard. Too long we’ve accepted compromise and allowed our own leaders to sell us out. This is what President Clinton did… we need to hold all our leadership accountable.”
Cleve shares with us his thoughts on President Clinton crossing the picket line.

The fishy biological origins of sex.
Here’s another reason for pushing marriage equality: the environment. If Australian Senator Steve Fielding is right and divorce is ecologically unsound, then allowing same-sex couples to legally marry just may save the earth.
American Idol Judge Simon Cowell clarifies the rumors of him wanting to be frozen upon death. For now he’ll just enjoy being icy in life, not in death, thank you very much.
The world’s most unfortunate names.

Check out the world’s most windowed office building. Isn’t it cute? It looks like some cubist block of swiss cheese. Wouldn’t it totally blow if you worked there and didn’t have an office with a window?
How ecologists use magnets to confuse crocodiles.

Rick Stokes did what almost every gay man in Kansas did back in the 1950s- he got married to a woman. His wife knew that he had a number of gay experiences before they got married but whether it was naivety or wishful thinking, they thought his desire for a gay life would go away.
When his desires wouldn’t abate, his family, his wife and his in-laws convinced him to undergo electro shock therapy to cure him. After many treatments and with no guarantee of success, Rick opted out of this unusual treatment and ended his marriage. But he says later it was the kick in the pants he needed to help him to chase his own rainbow colored dreams.
He moved to Sacramento, CA to find the man who he would eventually spend 35 years with. Along with his partner, Rick formed the Association for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) to provide social interaction and to promote pro-gay action.
They group provided a place for people to feel good about being gay and to accomplish pro gay activities. One such activity was to raise awareness about STDs like gonorrhea or syphilis which were very common but were little understood by gay men or even by their doctors.
The pair eventually moved to San Francisco and became involved in the gay scene. Having acquired a law degree, Rick became well known as the “go to” guy if you got busted by the police for what were punishable offenses back in the day. Often times, people arrested for what was considered lewd behavior pleaded down to a lesser crime in order to reduce the risk of being found out and losing work. Rick convinced people to not “plead out” their cases but to go to trail. Eventually, the court system figured out that they weren’t go to win any of these cases so the police stopped targeting gay men.
Rick later ran against Harvey Milk for Supervisor seat in 1977 and lost. He will be portrayed by in the upcoming film “Milk” by Stephen Spinella, an openly gay actor known for his role in Angels in America and Spring Awakening on Broadway.
Listen as we talk with Rick about the horrors of being electrocuted in attempts to change your sexuality, working for gay rights in America at a time when being gay as illegal and where we are all headed in our fight for sexual diversity.

We have a passion for fashion, especially when it gets a little weird. We found lots of hot fashion for you to enjoy.
Say hello to Hello Kitty, the fashion icon created by Sanrio, has been named ambassador for tourism by the government of Japan. As ambassador, I wonder if she will have diplomatic immunity and be able to kill at random and get away with it. i predict you’ll see it on Law and Order soon enough.
Boobs- they are not just for girls anymore. It seems boys in the Uk are sporting boobs now more than ever. There are a number of reasons why boy boobs are the rage right now but the most the most common factor is obesity. But, it’s important to realize that that the boy boobs aren’t just fat and that actual breast tissue is forming just like in girls.
Other causes for the boy boobs phenomenon is certain medications, body building drugs or even possibly increased levels of female hormones or chemicals that mimc their effect that are in the environment. Boy boobs, how long will this fad last?
Vanessa Randall created a minty fresh prom dress out of gum wrappers. It took the savvy teen three years of gum wrapper collecting and a lot of duct tape to make her Japanese inspired cocktail dress. She just finished it in the nick of time for the prom.
I just love it when girls get creative making fancy outfits out of everyday objects. Remember Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the Wind? Or better yet, Carol Burnett’s parody of the book and movie, “Went with the Wind,” where Carol as “Starlet” makes a dress out of curtains and proclaims to Rat Butler “I just saw it in the window and had to have it.”
Electronic tattoos of the future just might save your life. A subcutaneous blood fueled display may monitor for many blood disorders, alerting the person of a health problem. What’s amazing is that the device will be powered by glucose and oxygen from your blood supply. Now, if they could just get it to be powered by the fat in my love handles, I’d be the first one in line to get one.
Join us as we chat about a Japanese parrots who made its way home, Harvey Milk Gets Busted and what are the REAL reasons Jodie Foster left her “beloved” Cydney Bernard?
“That voice is so intense it could rupture a virgin’s hymen.” Yes, it’s Amanda Steinstein on the Feast of Fools.
