Today we’re talking to gay rights activist Nik Maciejewski, co-founder and organizer for the Chicago chapter of Join the Impact, a grassroots internet-based gay rights group which rapidly developed a national coalition after the passage of Proposition 8, the anti-marriage amendment in California.

He wants you to get involved in the battle for gay rights even if you’re not gay! People from all around the country will be going to the nation’s capital for the National Equality March over Columbus Day weekend, which coincides with National Coming Out Day.

Nik talks with us about why there’s an urgent need to fight for rights at the national level and takes a look at why young people are all of a sudden getting involved in activism. He also takes questions from you through the Feast of Fun Facebook page.

Drag queen Lady Vera Parker moved to Chicago with the hopes of making it big as an entertainer. Last week, her dreams were dashed when she was pulled over in U-Haul truck she allegedly stole in Kentucky. When the police pulled up her record they found a laundry list of check fraud and deception warrants. She’s now being held in Cook County Prison awaiting trial.

Kevin’s worked with the now infamous Lady Vera Parker and is here to explain in detail, what, to the best of his knowledge, happened and what the future holds for this John Waters villain come to life.

Her Biggest Crime? Lady Vera Parker wore silver heels on a "jungle" themed gay parade float in ChicagoAdding to her growing list of atrocities, Lady Vera Parker was also spotted on a “jungle” themed gay pride parade float wearing silver pumps. What kind of self-respecting drag queen would be caught wearing those?

If you think we’re being too hard on her, remember the crimes she’s being accused of and the people she allegedly robbed.

Thanks to Ryan Kolodziej for the wonderful photos of Lady Vera Parker.

Siedah Garrett and The Agape International Choir’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Siedah Garrett and The Agape International Choir’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Soul diva Siedah Garrett sings the song she wrote for Michael Jackson “Man in the Mirror” with L.A.’s Agape International Choir

I caught an interview with songwriter Siedah Garrett about writing the song “Man in the Mirror” for Michael Jackson. As you can imagine, the news media has been all over her, asking her to reflect on his death. In response, she turned to Los Angeles’ Agape International Choir to perform a very moving version of “Man in the Mirror.”

Check it out folks, this is Michael’s favorite song performed by the woman who wrote it.

For me this performance brings home why Michael Jackson’s death has had such a profound impact– Michael Jackson was a musician who like President Obama brought the African American voice and experience to a mass audience and now with Michael’s death, a little “Hope” died.

Sadly, in the recent years, scandals, lawsuits and a poor selling album marred the legendary musician’s career. He and his fans hoped his return concert would re-ignite his career and we feel the pain of his death more deeply as our our hopes for a great comeback are lost.

This video reminds me on how he merged African American gospel music and pop music together.

I wrote to the church asking them to post the video online, and they said, “sure!” So here it is folks. These guys look fabulous! If I lived in L.A., I’d go there all the time.

Thankfully, women like Siedah live on, and of course the music lives on as well. — R.I.P.M.J.

Larry's New BookQueer Theorist Larry La Fountain joins us on the second half of the show, answering questions on why we don’t have a single gay civil rights leader, the Puertorican tranny Sylvia Rivera who is credited with throwing the first bottle in the Stonewall riots and why Brazil is so gay.
