 Standard Podcast [1:08:40m]:

Activist, writer Cleve Jones on the Feast of Fools podcastHow far have we come in the fight for gay, lesbian, bisexual ans transgendered rights since the 1970s?

Gus Van Sant’s new biographic film MILK brings forth a chilling timeliness with parallels to the anti-gay measures passed in the last election.

Have we come a long way baby, or have we only just begun?

On today’s show we have the real-life Cleve Jones, Harvey Milk’s protegee and friend portrayed by the hunky actor Emile Hirsch in the film. Since the 1970s, he has been working tirelessly for gay rights and union organization.

On the anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk, Cleve conceived the idea for the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the world’s largest community arts project and memorial to the lives of over 85,000 Americans killed by AIDS.

Cleve shares his experience with the film and his thoughts on boycotts and the fight against proposition 8. Cleve is asking for the gay community to boycott Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego because the owner of the hotel gave $125,000 to Yes on Prop 8 campaign. They are having a community forum on the boycott on December 6th at the Center on Halsted at noon. Call 773.472.6469 for details.

Will we ever see a political leader like Harvey Milk again, and where’s their Facebook profile?  It seems Obama won the election online, maybe we’ll find the same success as the new generation of queer youth network and organize on the internet.

Cleve Jones gives Marc Felion a big hugJoin us as Cleve answers how accurate was the movie? Was it a mistake to release the film after the November election? Was Harvey Milk’s lover Scott Smith as attractive as actor James Franco? What was assassin Dan White’s sinister relationship to the San Francisco Police Department?

And does the potential for winning an Oscar help an actor kick it up a notch on the Kinsey Scale?

Find out, PLUS- we’ve got Cleve Jones for the hour plus questions from you, our listeners.

 Standard Podcast [1:03:26m]:

Christmas Pandas

Thanksgiving has come and gone, but we’re stuck with a fridge full of delicious food, the only problem is it’s all TURKEY.

What do you do with leftovers when the holidays have come and gone? You can really only eat so much Turkey Tetrazinni.

Go see Milk the MovieOn today’s show our good friend blogger Michael “too legit to quit” Lehet joins us to talk about the movie, Milk, starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay publicly elected official.

Will Sean Penn get an Oscar nod? Why didn’t we see James Franco’s prosthetic penis? And which famous San Francisco drag queen was chewing gum during a pivotal scene?

The aftermath of the last election leaves many queer people in this country feeling anxious and that little has changed since the 1970s. It can feel like we’ve not come a long way, baby.

But the greatest atrocity this week was Rosie Live, Rosie O’Donnell’s attempt at reviving the television variety show was dead on arrival. Why Rosie, why? We love the 70s variety show genre and we hope someone else can revive it. Please don’t let Rosie be the last nail in the coffin. Create your own podcast sidekick with the virtual Rosie (Riding the Bus with My Sister) soundboard.

Fausto at the World of ChocolateThe fabulous fundraiser- World of Chocolate happens this Wednesday Dec 3, in Chicago will Michael find his true love at this delicious event?

Join us as we talk about why John Barrowman is always welcome on the Feast of Fools and why Boy George isn’t. Plus, dangerous boobs, gay penguins and prehistoric marijuana found in an ancient tomb. We wonder if can you smoke it?

The canary in the cave mine of crazy- Feast of Fools.

FOFA #829 – Stoking the Fire

 Standard Podcast:

Activist Rick Stokes on the Feast of Fools podcastRick Stokes did what almost every gay man in Kansas did back in the 1950s- he got married to a woman. His wife knew that he had a number of gay experiences before they got married but whether it was naivety or wishful thinking, they thought his desire for a gay life would go away.

When his desires wouldn’t abate, his family, his wife and his in-laws convinced him to undergo electro shock therapy to cure him. After many treatments and with no guarantee of success, Rick opted out of this unusual treatment and ended his marriage. But he says later it was the kick in the pants he needed to help him to chase his own rainbow colored dreams.

Rick Stokes gets a thank you kiss from Fausto Fernós (Marc Felion left, Alex in the back)He moved to Sacramento, CA to find the man who he would eventually spend 35 years with. Along with his partner, Rick formed the Association for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) to provide social interaction and to promote pro-gay action.

They group provided a place for people to feel good about being gay and to accomplish pro gay activities. One such activity was to raise awareness about STDs like gonorrhea or syphilis which were very common but were little understood by gay men or even by their doctors.

The pair eventually moved to San Francisco and became involved in the gay scene. Having acquired a law degree, Rick became well known as the “go to” guy if you got busted by the police for what were punishable offenses back in the day. Often times, people arrested for what was considered lewd behavior pleaded down to a lesser crime in order to reduce the risk of being found out and losing work. Rick convinced people to not “plead out” their cases but to go to trail. Eventually, the court system figured out that they weren’t go to win any of these cases so the police stopped targeting gay men.

Rick later ran against Harvey Milk for Supervisor seat in 1977 and lost. He will be portrayed by in the upcoming film “Milk” by Stephen Spinella, an openly gay actor known for his role in Angels in America and Spring Awakening on Broadway.

Listen as we talk with Rick about the horrors of being electrocuted in attempts to change your sexuality, working for gay rights in America at a time when being gay as illegal and where we are all headed in our fight for sexual diversity.
