Naturally, many uptight Christians are upset by the image on Buzzfeed and Cakehead Loves Evil.

But why does this offend them? It’s not like they aren’t drinking booze in their churches. I think a manger made from beer makes a lot of sense and actually seems sincere. What offends me is they didn’t use “Lite” beer, with everybody watching their weight nowadays. Would wine have been more appropriate?

What does it mean to “respect” someone’s religion? Part of our religious beliefs is to laugh at other people’s religious beliefs.

There’s so many things wrong with this, but why am I having a hard time putting my finger on it? Still, I think it’s a catchy song. If you listen closely at the end, Orrin’s singing backup.

Almost a decade ago Orrin Hatch, the conservative Mormon Senator from Utah, while trying to run for President, was interviewed by writer Jeffrey Goldberg for the New York Times Magazine on why he didn’t write any Hanukkah songs. Maybe because he’s a conservative mormon?

But Jeffrey wouldn’t let it drop. Last December he wrote on his blog:

I reminisced on my Atlantic blog about the time Hatch nearly wrote a Hanukkah song for me. A couple of days later, I received an email that read, “Dear Jeff, I know it’s nine years too late, but I hope you will like some of the following ideas.” What followed were five verses of a sincerely felt Hanukkah song.

I guess his intentions are sincere, but why does everything Sen. Hatch do always carry such sinister overtones to it? This guy goes to a church that does posthumous baptisms of Jews killed in Nazi concentration camps. Oh he’s against marriage equality, a woman’s right to choose an abortion, universal health care and he likes to pinch kittens to hear them meow in pain. Still he’s considered a “liberal” Republican because of his support of stem cell research and state-subsidized higher education to illegal immigrants.

Pretty Little Dresses

Girl on a fieldSarah was sitting in the front pew resplendent in yellow and blue. Her mother had dressed her in a new beautiful dress. They sat in the front in anticipation of Father Bishop asking a child what he or she learned that Sunday after sermon.

The church was hot and muggy and Sarah was getting restless. Sarah’s mother tried to keep her engaged as the sermon was finally coming to an end. As Father Bishop stepped away from the alter, he spotted young Sarah.

Sarah’s mother perked up and sat straighter in her pew. Adjusting her hat and prodding Sarah to sit straighter, Father Bishop approached while wrapping up his sermon. Microphone in hand he came to Sarah and asked what she thought of the sermon. Occasionally he would uncover a gem of wisdom when it came from a child.

Sarah was bashful and it appeared she would need a little prompting. “What’s your name young lady?” he asked. “I’m Sarah” she responded looking at her black shoes. “Well Sarah, do you and your parents talk about coming to church?” She looked at her mom and she smiled encouragingly at her.

“Yes, they talk about it all the time” she finally answered. Feeling that he made a good choice in picking her, he ventured further. “Well can you tell me what they talked about in preparation for mass today?”

“Well mom and dad were in a hurry this morning, Dad told Mom thank you for the quickie before mass.” Father Bishop flushed, and Sarah’s mother looked like she was about to pass out. He tried to rescue the situation, so he asked “Tell me about your wonderful dress!” “Well Mom says it’s a bitch to iron, and that the old bastard better notice this time.”

Sarah looked so pleased with herself, as her mother sank as low as the pew would allow. It was a very long service after that.

Siedah Garrett and The Agape International Choir’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Siedah Garrett and The Agape International Choir’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Soul diva Siedah Garrett sings the song she wrote for Michael Jackson “Man in the Mirror” with L.A.’s Agape International Choir

I caught an interview with songwriter Siedah Garrett about writing the song “Man in the Mirror” for Michael Jackson. As you can imagine, the news media has been all over her, asking her to reflect on his death. In response, she turned to Los Angeles’ Agape International Choir to perform a very moving version of “Man in the Mirror.”

Check it out folks, this is Michael’s favorite song performed by the woman who wrote it.

For me this performance brings home why Michael Jackson’s death has had such a profound impact– Michael Jackson was a musician who like President Obama brought the African American voice and experience to a mass audience and now with Michael’s death, a little “Hope” died.

Sadly, in the recent years, scandals, lawsuits and a poor selling album marred the legendary musician’s career. He and his fans hoped his return concert would re-ignite his career and we feel the pain of his death more deeply as our our hopes for a great comeback are lost.

This video reminds me on how he merged African American gospel music and pop music together.

I wrote to the church asking them to post the video online, and they said, “sure!” So here it is folks. These guys look fabulous! If I lived in L.A., I’d go there all the time.

Thankfully, women like Siedah live on, and of course the music lives on as well. — R.I.P.M.J.

FOF #854 – Round Two, Obama Vs. McCain

FOF #854 – Round Two, Obama Vs. McCain

 Standard Podcast [56:27m]:

What was up with that RED carpet?Ding ding, Round Two! Barak Obama and John McCain face-off once again in the fight for America’s Presidency, stabilizing the economy and our hearts.

What was up with that red carpet? It hurt my eyes!

Wasn’t it great when Tom Brockaw told McCain to get out of the way so he could finish the show?

Obama came across once again as eloquent, well informed and level headed. Is America ready to have a competent leader? I think so, Yes we can! Nail McCain to the wall Obama!

What does the sound of a failing political campaign sound like? “TERRORISM!” Last weekend Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain both directly declared their political opponent associated with terrorists and even scoff indifferently when their supporters jokingly threatened to kill Senator Obama. Is this what the election has boiled down to?

One way the Republicans can win this election is to simply lock away Sen. Obama in Guantanamo bay, but as Harold and Kumar showed in their movie, it’s way easy to escape.

The Carpenter's HalloweenI went with Michael Lehet to see the Scooty and JoJo’s Carpenter’s Halloween, a reenactment of Halloween John Carpenter’s Halloween set to the music of the Carpenters. It’s truly an odd mix of horror and camp. If you are a fan of camp, drag, the movie Halloween or the music of the Carpenters then this is a must see for you.

Get your tickets now if you want good seats. Also, the set is in FULL COLOR and you won’t believe how good it looks!

Michael and I also saw Watch Out based on Joseph Suglia’s book that features the super sexy Matt Riddlehoover as narcissistic Jonathan Burrows, who is only sexually attracted to himself and even makes love to a blow up doll that looks like himself.

RiddlehooverThrough Jonathan’s journey we encounter many strange characters, all of whom are sexually attracted to the very handsome protagonist but in who he has no interest whatsoever. He delivers a condescending diatribe against them about why he would never find them attractive and even kills some of them. This movie is a totally over the top cross between Strangers with Candy and Jeffrey Dahlmer.

Michael convinced me to go the Improv Everywhere’s MP3 Chicago which I initially didn’t want to go because it sounded a bit hokey- I was to download an mp3 audio file, be at a specific location and do what ever it told me to do at a precise time. Now, I’ve seen enough X-Files or Twilight Zone episodes to know how terribly wrong things like this can go. For all I know it could have turned me into a government assassin.

Marc at Improv EverywhereBut, after a long night partying with Miss Tracy Tyler we all hopped in the car and experienced what turned out to be a very fun day. Sometimes it is fun to do just let yourself go and let someone else call the shots. And I totally kicked ass in the Epic Battle.

Listen as we talk about the bizarre Anglican Reverend Peter Mullen, who suggests tattooing gay men’s butts with health warning signs. How about tattooing priests faces with “Religion can seriously damage your mental health.”

What’s the secret to the Beckhams beautiful skin?
Bird Poop! Yes, they are both getting sh*tfaced for beauty. Its an exotic beauty treatment for Japan.

Nailing the Jell-O to the wall every time- Feast of Fools.

Scott Pomfret on the Feast of Fools podcastGay people are the backbone of many of the world’s great religions, but sadly under difficult times these Churches scapegoat some of their most beloved members.

High ranking Catholic Church officials blamed the scandalous cover up of child molestation on the church’s tolerance of gay men.

On today’s Feast of Fools we’ve got two authors who’ve written extensively about being gay and Catholic and their experience about speaking out against the institutional homophobia.

Jim Leija on the Feast of Fools podcastJoining us today is Scott Pomfret, Boston resident and author of a hilarious new book Since My Last Confession, a memoir of his experience as a lector in the Catholic Church in Boston and his quest to convince his arch-nemesis, Cardinal O’Malley, to invite him to serve at a weekly mass.

Scott was recently let go from the positions he held at the church because the friars had a problem with how the book was being marketed to the public. They don’t seem to have a problem with the book itself but they find the marketing of the book incongruous with their beliefs.

Also joining us is Jim Leija, a filmmaker, performance artist and longtime listener living in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His story “Dance or Die” shares his experience witnessing the aftermath of an outcast high school student’s suicide and how he become the first recipient of a scholarship set up by the dead boy’s parents.

The short story is also included in the book Queer and Catholic, a collection of powerful stories about how being Catholic permanently influences people’s identities.

Listen as we talk about why people tolerate their intolerant religions, the consequences of speaking out and where the Catholic Church’s attitudes will be toward gays in the future.

FOF #845 – Redefining Spirituality

 Standard Podcast [55:30m]:

Mark Anthony Lord on the Feast of Fools podcastMany of the world’s religions often stand in the way in the advancement for gay rights. As churches struggle to reconcile with modern times, they often scapegoat their own queer members in order to retain influence and power.

Because of this, a lot of people feel animosity to the religions they grew up with and as adults reject it wholeheartedly.

Jeff Stahl on the Feast of Fools podcastOn today’s show we’re talking to two men who are taking a fresh perspective on the core ideas behind religion- who are we, where we are going and why do terrible things happen? Ultimately, what is the meaning of my life?

We’ve got Mark Anthony Lord- the spiritual director for the Chicago Center for Spiritual Living and Jeff Stahl, a licensed therapist who counsels people in moments of terrible grief.

Listen as we talk about finding a time and space to quiet the mind, the nature of addiction- why do we seek out things to destroy ourselves and how to take concrete steps to embrace a deeper understanding of your own life.

Mark has a free daily gay affirmation that looks very promising on his site. For some more inspiration checkout these fun video daily drag queen affirmations. It will cost you $20 a year but they do have some free samples. Thanks Fred for the link and yes, I am thoroughly enjoying them!
