FOF #882 – Rev. Straight Talks About Prop. 8

 Standard Podcast [1:01:16m]:

Fausto Fernós and the Rev. Charles StraightHow do you stop the hate in 2008? The recent passing of Proposition 8, a California State ballot aimed to take away the State’s ability to issue same-sex marriage licenses is raising questions on the role of race and sexuality in this last election. It’s also making people highly aware of the differences. Not everyone who voted for Obama was for marriage equality. How could that possibly be?

Marc Felion and the Rev. Charles StraightAlthough the African American religious vote made a small but significant difference in passing this ordinance, many people are pitting gay rights advocates against the black church.

Did queer folks fail to reach out to black churches or did these Churches fail to see the universal struggle for equality in their own back yard?

Why wasn’t Barack Obama’s rejection of the measure a bigger part of the campaign against the proposition?

On today’s show we have Chicago’s very own, the Rev. Charles Straight- Pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, in Dalton Illinois.

He’s here to help us make sense of what happened and what we can learn from this setback in order to fight against injustice wherever it rears it’s ugly head, even when it means taking a good hard look at ourselves.

In case you didn’t catch it, Wanda Sykes has come out, saying that she was born a beautiful black lesbian. Does being biologically gay mean people will be less likely to discriminate against you?

And the truth about beer goggles. British researchers conducted a study on the effects of alcohol on our attraction to others. They found out that tipsy men and women tend to rate their own genders as more attractive even after, as little as, one drink.

There is much to celebrate!

FOF #734 – Reverend Straight

 Standard Podcast:

The hilarious, insightful and unconventional Rev. Charles M StraightThe Rev. Charles Straight was there when it happened. In the eighties he was a phlebotomist as the AIDS crisis exploded, when it was still called GRID or Gay Related Immune Disorder.

Today he’s the assistant pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church and preaches about how we must address our fear of gays when dealing with HIV and AIDS. For over 25 years he’s worked in AIDS activism to drive forward people’s perception of disease as a natural occurrence that must be dealt with directly and not as a punishment from God.

As board member of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago he helps guide the organization in focusing their efforts in the fight against AIDS.

As the host of Probation Challenge Radio he works to help keep at-risk folks out of jail. Did I mention he has five adopted kids? Rev. Straight is very comfortable wearing many hats.

black jesusListen as we ask the Reverend how do preachers decide what to say every Sunday? Is the process similar to blogging or is there something more to it? Do you always need to pull Biblical quotes to back up what you’re saying?

I’ve always wondered about the concept of a “Black Jesus.” You might have seen paintings of the physical Christian manifestation of God as a black man but what does it really mean? Is this for real or just a beautiful metaphor? And do Asian Christians have a Asian Jesus or Latinos have a Hispanic Jesus?

Listen to the show to find out.
