Wow Factor

The Patissier of the Opera

What may be the gayest and most elaborate Christmas decoration that we have seen this year is the jaw dropping and truly astounding Paris Opera House made out of Gingerbread by Curtis Jensen.

Curtis has been making Gingerbread pieces since he was a kid and this year Curtis was kind enough to videotape his construction of the Opera house. Some of the past pieces that Curtis has created have included San Francisco buildings and the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. Curtis’ secret to getting the scale right is to make everything in proportion to the candy columns.

Curtis, you are good looking AND talented. That is a fantastic gingerbread house. I was half expecting you to sit on it at the end but I guess you have already done that.

That was amazing! something I’ve always wondered about gingerbread houses though… after the holidays, do you eat them? I would imagine they would be stale by then so probably not very appetizing.

I ask him if he would sit on it after the holidays and he said he would consider it.

With the exception of the foam core substructure it is all edible, but it has usually been sitting there for 4-5 weeks by the time the holidays are done (I’m one of those people that starts putting up the holiday decorations on Thanksgiving). It is very stale, and the humidity in the air makes the unwrapped candy a little bit sticky to the touch. Not exactly appetizing. I usually just throw it in the garbage. Sadly it’s difficult to preserve. These things are temporary.
