Single Bob Fosse Mexican Breakfast Ladies

post a comment

Beyoncé Knowles has frequently said that the dancing in her video for “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” was inspired by a Bob Fosse-choreographed dance featuring Gwen Verdon from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969, but this side-by-side comparison shows that the “Single Ladies” video was more influenced than we may have originally thought.  In fact, at many points during the routine, Beyoncé and her backup dancers re-enact exact moves that Verdon and her dancers did in the original routine.

Is this a case of “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” or is it blatant copying?

Just for good measure, here is the original “Mexican Breakfast” routine, with some hilarious play-by-play commentary to “helpfully explain” what is happening by gay performance artist and YouTube user Corey Michael Smithson. HILARIOUS!
