I still can’t figure out why David Hasselhoff’s music is popular in Germany. One things for sure, he never fails to entertain.
During MTV’s 2009 European Music Awards (EMA) the actor best known for his appearances on the TV shows “Baywatch” and “Knight Rider” as well as the viral video of him eating a cheeseburger off his hotel room floor.
Chances are these days he’ll show up drunk to just about anything.
As David Hasselhoff went up to the podium he blurted into the mic: “I am not responsible for the wall coming down, these Germans are responsible for the wall coming down. They are responsible for the wall coming down because they believed in FREEDOM!”
I know you might be shaking your heads in disapproval, but shouldn’t rock stars always be a little drunk?
We all know who the real berlin wall is. - Thanks D-Listed!

What a pity, Youtube deleted the Video. But I found it again on myvideo.
He is really drunk. Maybe rock stars should be a little drunk while they are on stage but David Hasselhoff is clearly an alcoholic. I don’t know if I should laugh or be sad about this. This man is throwing his life away.
He is still kind of popular in Germany because his TV show “Knight Rider” was a huge success in Germany. As a kid I also often watched “Knight Rider” with my friends.
And then in 1989, while he was still popular and famous due to “Knight Rider” he appeared at the right time (fall of the Berlin wall) at the right place (In Berlin, in front of the wall) with the right song called “I was looking for freedom”. Of course the song was a hit, for weeks it was the chart’s number one. Another reason for the song’s success might be the similarity to the German music genre “Schlager”. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlager#Germany_and_Austria)
But nowadays his music is not popular anymore, except maybe for the song “I was looking for freedom”. Though Germans still like him and before Youtube deleted the video there were many comments in German who actually defended David Hasselhoff. I think the ambivalent feelings of Germans towards him are well described with some irony in the article “David Hasselhoff- Another German national trauma” which you can find under “related posts”.
Sorry, the embed video does not work. Here is a link to it:

And of course the song’s name is “I have been looking for freedom”.
